On our last trip to DL, we splurged on the Blue Bayou. While the ambiance was fantastic, the entree of the flat iron steak was just alright. Being an avid BBQ griller, I can do better.

BUT, what we all remember was how good the New Orleans Gumbo soup was before the entree came out. It was perfect. So here's my question: over at the Royal Street Veranda, are one of the option there similar to what they serve in the BB? I see hey have steak and vegetarian gumbo. Hoping that one of them is similar. I'd like to try that soup again.

I guess my second question is if it's Gluten Free or not. Not sure if the wife could even have this anymore.

I loved the gumbo appetizer too! Cafe Orleans has the same gumbo, with the chicken, sausage and ham, in a cup or bowl size. We made a lunch reservation and I had a bowl of it with the Pomme Frites and it was awesome!

I believe the version at Royal Street Veranda is with beef, and a much darker beef broth base, and served in a bread bowl.

I am not sure either is gluten free... but the salad with chicken or salmon at Cafe Orleans sounds awesome! So do the kids meals!!

I used to love the Gumbo and would get it even on the hottest days, but last visit I got it and was so disappointed. I swore there was chicken in it the first time I got it, not a big beef fan. So now I just get their cheddar broccoli soup.

Gumbo and pomme frites at Cafe Orleans for the win. The Royal Street Veranda gumbo is not even close to what is served at Blue Bayou or Cafe Orleans. It pales in comparison. We make our own gumbo at home which is even better than Blue Bayou. Took a long time and a lot of experimentation, but the secret is Tasso Ham. It is a must.

As others have said, the gumbo at Royal Street Veranda is not like the one at Blue Bayou; the two options are beef or vegetarian. The beef one has good flavor, but is a bit spicy. The gumbo at Cafe Orleans (chicken, Andouille Sausage, and Tasso ham) is very similar to the one at Blue Bayou (I think they might be the same, but I'm not 100% sure).
