Long story, but I'm stopping in New Orleans for lunch on the way to Fl. Any suggestions on where to go? Price isn't that much an issue, but, I'm wearing shorts and T-shirt, so no place with a dress code.
Thanks,
J.

Cafe Maspero -- 601 Decatur St. Ate there in October 2003 -- made the mistake of ordering a garden salad. There was nothing wrong with the salad -- quite good, in fact. It's just that it took up valuable room for my deep fried shrimp. Massive portions -- but the deep fried shrimp defeated me!

I just had lunch in New Orleans today. What a coincidence!

RC is right: Cafe Maspero is a nice casual place. Good roast beef, pastrami as well as seafood. It's located in the French Quarter.

I like the Napoleon House as well. It's at 500 Chartres St. near Cafe Maspero. It's in a 200 year old building where an apartment was built for the then exiled Napoleon (he never made it here).

A little nicer, maybe a bit more upscale but still casual is the Redfish Grille at 115 Bourbon Street. Run by one of the Brennan's (a famous old New Orleans restaurant), it's got a good lunch menu and isn't terribly expensive.

Check out www.nomenu.com which is a local food critic/talk show host's website.

So when are you coming to New Orleans? If you're not going to be downtown near the French Quarter, I could recommend some other places.

Hi, and thanks for the tips already. I'll be there a week from tomorrow. I thought likely the French Quarter to eat, but it doesn't have to be. Was only there once, about 10 years ago, and I recall we had beignets (sp) which were great, but can't recall having lunch anywhere.

Hi, I looked at some of the links so far. All look good, but I'm looking for more than Po Boys/Sandwiches. We have some good eatin' places here in Chicago, including a real good New Orleans style place (Heaven on Seven). I suppose I'm looking for sit down, Bourbon street area, gumbo and stuff like that. Any other recommendations?

Are you driving? Do you plan to stay in NOLA? If you are driving and not staying in NOLA, you are going a bit out of the way for a trip to Orlando. Maybe another 100 miles. Sorry, I like NOLA, but not on my way to WDW.

We are flying in to New Orleans for a quick trip to visit in Baton Rouge. Any place good for a casual late lunch near the airport in New Orleans? Beignets are essential, by the way!

I can't think of a place near the airport, but I live in Baton Rouge. There are a ton of places. Where in BR will you be and I can give you some ideas. For Beignets, the best is always Cafe Du Monde, but that won't be a lunch place. There is one in Kenner, maybe someone can help with directions from the airport, I just find it when I need to!! But for lunch, in BR, I'd try Sammy's on Highland- great food and casual.

They actually sell beignets in the airport. I can't think of any place that serves both lunch and beignets. If I were you and you don't want to venture into the city, I'd go to Metairie and eat at Drago's http://www.dragosrestaurant.com/index2.htm (wonderful charbroiled oysters on the half-shell and other seafood dishes and poboys) - around the corner there is a beignet place called Morning Call. I'm not sure how big of an eater you are because you will be stuffed if you do this! :)

Hi, to answer a few questions, I'm flying into NO, then getting a car and heading to Fla. As I mentioned, it's a long story. I'm only go to get something to eat, see the Battlefield, then head out from there. Maybe take a bag of beignets for the trip, but looking for a sit-down type place to eat for lunch that would be 'traditional', if such a thing is possible.
Thanks for the great leads so far.

I'll second Tooneric's recommendation of the Redfish Grill. It's on Bourbon and because it's a tourist area, dress shouldn't be an issue for lunch. Just down the street, I'd also recommend the Bourbon House for fresh seafood and gumbo's.

Fred S: Can't think of anything right near the airport, but in a 10 minute drive you could get a good casual lunch at the Acme Oyster House on Veterans Blvd. They have good po-boys, gumbo, fresh or chargrilled oysters, and seafood plates. Just take I-10 east from the airport for 5-6 miles, exit Causeway Blvd. north, stay to your right and take the first right on Veterans Blvd. Acme Oyster House is within 2 blocks on your right.

After lunch, you can get back on Veterans, take a U-turn to head west (towards the airport) and after you pass the light at Clearview Blvd. (about 2-3 miles) you'll see a Cafe Du Monde on the left (you'll need to take another U-turn).

From Cafe Du Monde, you can easily get back on the interstate at Clearview and head west to Baton Rouge.

Prof, there's lots of really nice traditional (and pricey) restaurants in the French Quarter (Arnaud's, Galitoire, Antoine's comes to mind) but since you mentioned shorts and a tee shirt, you may be underdressed for those. I still stand by Redfish Grille as a good choice in the quarter, although I'd call it more contemporary than traditional New Orleans. Tom Fitzmorris (see his website www.nomenu.com) gives the Gumbo Shop in the quarter pretty good marks, and it's menu is more traditional: three different types of gumbo, Shrimp Creole, Jambalaya...

As far as near the airport, La Parvenue is in River Town isn't too far. It's on Tom's website and the address is listed.

Hummm, I'm getting hungry! May step out to Wendy's now... :rolleyes1

As long as we're on the topic of restaurants in NO, can someone help me out? A few years ago, I ate at a little place htat served primarily seafood. It was 2 stories and had an awesome view of the bridge over Lake P. Can anyone tell me what the nam eof that place was?

Need a little more info.....do you know if you were in Bucktown or West End?

I can't really think of any two story restaurants that overlook the Causeway bridge.

OK. I looked at a map. It was not the west end area. It was west of teh causeway. Maybe around Loyola? It wa s2-story but still quite small. VERY casual, but I remember good food and my first Mint Julep! :teeth:

We've had very good French Quarter lunches at Mr. B's Bistro (yet another restaurant run by the Brennan's clan) and Bayonna. Neither had a serious dress code. There were more business people at Mr. B's, so it was sorta dressy. But we weren't dressed up and didn't feel out of place. Bayonna was spectacular, some of the best food in town.

Asked a friend that lives there and went to Loyola...he said maybe R&O's?

I was hoping th name would ring a bell, but I guess I'm just hopeless....

Arrggghh! Too many choices! I was set on Redfish till I read the Gumbo shop review. Maybe if I do both and have a moveable feast. Then, I'd likely never get to Florida.
