Disney is not changing the name of MGM because Disney does not own or control Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

Disney is changing the name of the Disney-MGM Studios theme park in Florida to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, effective January 2008.

For discussion of the new name, see this thread from 08/09/07: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1543761

Hate the new name... Should have called it Disney-Pixar Studios, IMHO. Of course, if they really want to make a change, get rid of that UGLY NASTY GIANT HAT that is way out of place in front of GMR. While GMR needs updating the Chinese theatre created a far better effect than a stupid Pin trading station.

But how do you really feel about the magical Sorcerer Mickey hat?

Effective Jan 2008? Like sign changes and everything? I've been wondering... because every once in a while you hear the slip "Disney Studios" rather than MGM.

ps. The hat is now a landmarked symbol... I doubt they'll get rid of it until they find another symbol for the park. But hey, maybe that will change with the name change.

It's effective January 7, 2008.

A lot of the old references to "Disney Studios" instead of "Disney-MGM Studios" were due to limitations in the contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. For example, Disney couldn't use the MGM name on videos, so promotional and DVDs and VHS tapes called the park "Disney Studios."

The park remained "Disney-MGM Studios" despite occasions when references to MGM were omitted. Disney announced the name change in August.

Presumably, there will be some transition time when both names can found on signs and merchandise. I imagine that transition has already begun.

The Chinese Theatre and the water tower are both good symbols for the park. Those symbols worked well from 1989 to 2001.
