I have been stalking this forum but never posting until now. We just returned from our trip last weekend, and while there, got the sales pitch and tour with the incentives (fastpasses, gift card, etc.) for Cooper Creek. We took everything home and reviewed everything. Even my skeptical husband was convinced. This was our FOURTH trip to our favorite place, the Wilderness Lodge. Our guide said he was amazed that no one asked us before now. We have spent so much $$$$ for rooms at the WL, this just makes sense for us. Now we have a reason to go more frequently!

I did have a couple of general questions that did not stick out to me in the mounds of paperwork, if you wouldn't mind humoring me. I know these will seem like really dumb questions, so forgive me in advance:

If we find ourselves short on points for where we want to go -- say for example we decide we want to go during premier season instead of our usual magic season. Can we rent the extra points from another member? How would that work? Does member services help with that?

Also, am I allowed to rent out my points to family members? Say we decide not to go, but my brother and his family want to go. Can I rent my points out to him for whatever cost we agree on?

I have not logged onto the DVC member site yet to look around. I just can't get my mind wrapped complete around the rental of points. Maybe once I log on to the site it will be more clear.

In any case, we are very excited. Thanks for any tips/advice!

Welcome home!

In general, most of us would use banked points first, then current year points, and then borrow points from the following year. Only then would I consider renting some additional points. You can rent them from David’s DVC Rentals, or there is a section on this board for private rentals.

I will let others answer about renting to family members.

Thank you!!!

Yes, sorry. I should have been clear that I would bank/borrow first. We purchased the minimum - 100 points, which works perfectly for us in general. We can book up to 300 with bank/borrow. For the most part, this will be fine. I am just thinking of a scenario where we want to splurge and go bigger for a celebration, like my daughter's high school graduation or something. I am confused about the logistics of it. I assume that we would have to rent points for the specific resort. So if we wanted to stay at BLT (knowing we can only rent 7 months out) we would have to find someone with points for that specific resort. Seems like it would be tricky to do.

The family thing is just a question. Not sure if we would ever do it, just wondering if there are rules around who we are allowed to rent to in our place.

I don't think you're going to find anything about renting on the member website. And I don't think Member Services is going to help you if you want to rent from someone.

Renting is not prohibited, but it's not something DVC facilitates.

I suppose if you have the points and are able to book Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, for example, and you find some to rent from who can book Thursday, Friday and Saturday for you, you can call Member Services and tell them that you don't want to change rooms and you want to... well, there's a term and somebody here will be able to tell you what it is.

You can try to find someone to rent to/from on the Rental board here, or use an agency which acts as middle man.

have the reservations linked for a continuing stay.....

The owner of the rented reservation would also have to let them know as MS won't do it without their permission.

You'd actually want a transfer from another member, not rent from a member. If you get a transfer, they become your points to do what you wish. If you rent a reservation, the other member still owns it.

You can purchase up to 24 one time use points at seven months out for $17 a point direct from DVC when you want to make a reservation and you are a few points short. It's limited to once per UY.

Should you decide you don't need your points one year and don't want to bank them into the next UY, you can make a reservation for a guest and the guest pays you your predetermined price for the reservation. But with only 100 points, I'd just bank them and get a one bedroom instead of a studio next year.

One more thing, you bought Copper Creek, not Cooper Creek.

You can also have someone else transfer their points to you, and then you can combine them as if they were your own (though they keep their Use Year and home resort). You are not supposed to do this for money, but people do it all the time.

You can rent a reservation made with your points to anyone you like. That is clearly allowed, since Disney does it with their own points.

Thank you so much for the information. So if I need additional points, is it better to buy those additional points direct from Disney at $17 a point, or have them transferred by another member? Sorry for so many questions. I am assuming I will get more comfortable with all of this once I can log into the site and visually see how all this works.

As mentioned, the member website isn't really going to give you information on renting or transferring. Take a look at the rental board here to start getting an idea of how renting from another owner can work - or what is offered and how the communication goes.

The points available to rent from DVC are limited to 24 points in a UY and can only be purchased at the 7 month window. Depending on what time of year you plan to normally go that may or may not work and you might want to find another CCV owner so you can book your entire stay at 11 months.

If you are trying to book a hard to get home resort location, seven months out and that might be booked up. In that case, you need to have a transfer from another member lined up and done. But you have to be real careful about transfers since there are rules about them, too. One per UY in or out. Technically you cannot pay for a transfer, but otherwise, how are you going to get one? You and the other member have to talk to MS (without any mention of money) to get the transfer done. You cannot borrow transferred points, but you can bank them. You cannot transfer banked or borrowed points, only current year points.

Ok, I think I get the difference between rent/transfer/buy now in general. Do you all pretty much use this site (Disboards) for this kind of thing? I know about Dave's site for rental of points. Since MS doesn't help, it would seem hard to know how to do all this.

There are other sites, but Disboards is the best known to Disney fans who are non-owners (as you know!) so it's a great place to match up rentals.

Do you mind me asking the incentives they gave you to listen to the talk. What gift cards? I just bought direct and resale these pass few months but DH thinking of getting more information with sales rep in person. I don't want to waste time as I feel we are good, but incentives might make me change my mind

I didn't think members got any incentives for doing the tour other than for new resorts where you might get a slight cash incentive buying preopening.

We just toured an Aulani GV and wasn't offered anything.
