new matterhorn cars?

I was at DL today. Matterhorn was closed, service lights appeared to be on for the upper track portions but no visible activity, nor any sign of new/covered cars.

Same report from yesterday, although we did see several CMs on the upper tracks in the earlier part of the day and we did see a few covered cars (with what looked like tarps and duct tape, definitely temporary) but didn't stop to notice if they were possibly new cars or old cars covered up.

EDIT: According to all the signs that were up, it was down for regular seasonal maintenance.

I'm hoping the new cars are individual. Your little ones will only be little for a short time, but you will be riding the Matterhorn for years and individual seats are better. When you are alone it feels like you are flailing around.

I wonder how much of a difference these new cars will make. I really dont like this ride much due to it being really jerky and the seats are so uncomfortable. Specially when you have to buddy up and share. Besides some of the cool effects inside the mountain, I can pass up this ride. Although I am extremely curious now about these new cars and am actually looking forward to trying this ride out. I hope there are some who can keep us updated on this thread to tell us their experiences. :)

Yes, I'm curious too. I'm hoping that if they do get new cars that they will help smooth out the ride a bit. This ride give me a headache so I hardly ever ride it. Every few years DH and I try it again (thinking it must not be as bad as we remember) but it continues to be as jerky as ever.

I'm hopeful/confident the seats will still be able to fit two. Since they only let kids 7 and over ride alone, I don't think Disney would want to eliminate anyone under 7 from riding. That would split up most of the families in the parks if they wanted to ride. It's possible, I guess, just not sure why they'd make the ride more exclusive without safety concerns.

I didn't recall seeing any of these new cars anywhere yesterday. Just lots of the old ones. And there were many CM's around but no one appeared to be doing any sort of work. I too am sad if they make it so that it's all individual seating because my 3 yr old loves this ride and he certainly will not go alone. I wouldn't let him either. They do seem similar to the style of the space mountain cars in wdw? 3 to a car, 2 cars per train. I guess we'll have to wait and see what they end up doing.

Also would they raise the height restrictions then if, as another poster mentioned, only allow 7 year olds and up to ride alone? Just curious.

I ran a Google search and found this one:

Sort of hard to see the cars, but the seats do seem to be blue.

Yep, this is the pic I saw... and see above the seats? Lap bars that you pull down...

Please please please let the seats have lots of padding!!!!! :lmao: That ride is so jarring I always try to hold myself up off the seat because the bumpiness gives me a headache. :headache:

Specially when you have to buddy up and share.

Well they never make you. You can say you're just 1 and get your own seat.

So is this year-long rumor finally turning into something real? One does wonder! Because the posts, pictures, and thoughts are almost exactly the same that I remember reading a year or so ago! (absolutely NOT saying that people are purposely starting rumors...no one was back then, either...but nothing happened with the rumors then, so...)

I was there today - but no way was I waiting 60 min to ride it! It was closed all week and just up today. Have no info - didn't think to look at what cars were running.

Disneygeek has a photo update from yesterday 4/23 and he noticed they were cycling one of the new cars. Lots of pics! :thumbsup2

I was there 4/23 and yes there was one or two new cars in the mix. There was also quite a lot of activity with CMs and other individuals.

Update on Mouseplanet:

"A new prototype Matterhorn Bobsled was spotted at Disneyland during the attraction's brief refurbishment last week. The new sled holds three passengers per car, in individual seats instead of what MousePlanet reader Drince88 calls the "cuddle" seats that the current sleds sport. Although it was rumored that the new sleds had a lap bar, similar to the system used on Walt Disney World's Space Mountain, these sleds have seat belts. What looked to be a lap bar in some photos is actually the headrest for the individual seats.

Don't expect to see the new sleds now that the Matterhorn has reopened—a cast member tells us last week's goal was simply to test the prototype sleds, and that there is still "a lot" of work to be done. The source tells us that riders were not permitted in the new sleds this week, and that another attraction closure is likely to conduct additional trials after adjustments are made based on the results of this testing. New station gates will also have to be added to the attraction before the new sleds can be put into normal operation.

The configuration of the new sleds has some people worried, especially parents. MousePlanet reader houseofmouse called Disneyland and was told that the attraction's height limit will not change once the new sleds are put in use, but MammaSilva worries that parents won't have time to secure their children's seat belts and then their own without causing a back-up or possibly even an emergency stop."
