This could be a rumor but, a person just posted that the new kennel operators are saying that the WDW kennels will be closed and a new one is being built across from Port Orleans and will open summer of 2009. It then occurred to me that if this happens I will have no way to get my dogs over there since I have a motorhome with a golf cart in tow. I could take the motorhome but, who wants to unhook the motorhome, destroy camp and then squeeze it through the tiny loops every morning. I can't take the golf cart due to WDW rules saying no golf cart outside of FW. Leaving my dogs in the RV is not on option on hot days, mainly because I worry there could be a power outage and they would bake. :scared1: Here is the icing on the cake: there supposedly will be no transportaion to the new kennel. Why build a kennel and then have no way for people to get their dogs there (at least for us FW folks)? :confused3 I expect Disney will have many complaints from us FW folks due to this issue. I am hoping that this will not be the case and that some Kennels will stay, mainly the FW one. Sometimes, I think Disney doesn't always think things through.

Wow you have a point. I had not even thought of that. I have a 5ver so I can still get around. But I'm not happy with the FW Kennel closing. I have always enjoyed the staff at FW Kennels. I hope they get this worked out for you. We usally travel to FW when the weather is not that hot, but have put our dog in the kennel a number of times and picked her up afterwards.

The facility looks great and I would love to use it if I can figure out how to get my dogs there on a daily basis. I just wish that article would have answered if they are eventually going to shut the other kennels down. Maybe, I should contact this kennel or even Disney and give them heads up to this potential problem. What do you all think?

Yeah! Raise your voice! It's possible that every angle had not been thought out. At least you would know one way or the other.

I think the old kennel is where they are holding the mdgg 2009.

There is a new large facility being built, but as far as I've heard, it's going to be in addition to, not taking the place of, the existing kennels.

The existing kennels are being operated by the new company now, and I don't think they're closing. Here's the info: Kennels

But, I could be wrong. Maybe they have some inside info that we haven't heard yet. :confused3

I really hadn't thought too much about the kennel situation until Mystify's post. I guess I assumed it would be status quo for the other kennels. When I think about it from a business perspective, though, it really doesn't make sense to have a large, I assume centrally located facility and keep the smaller satellite operations going. Considering Disney seems to be heading toward making the Fort more pet friendly (eg. the dog park and increasing the number of pet loops), does this indicate the kennel may be closing? If so, unless Disney changes the policy re. pets in tents, popups and hybrids, then those of us who camp this way with our pets will be forced to board them in the new kennel, which sounds like it will be fairly expensive. I'm not sure the new company considered the present demographics when it came to the plan for the kennels. It appears that they are attempting to attract those visitors who may normally kennel their pets at home while they travel, hoping a "luxury" kennel will entice them into bringing pooch along and boarding at Disney. I'm not sure Mickey the Wonder Beagle really cares about luxury treatment - we don't read him bed time stories and he doesn't show much of an interest in TV. He just likes a place to sleep, his favorite Tigger stuffed toy, a biscuit once in a while and an occassional scratch behing the ear. Despite the hype and excitement when the new management and kennel were announced, I was not impressed and could be counted among those who were happy with the present situation. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, Disney.

Can you please fedex down Mickey the Wonder Beagle to the MGCC, we want to meet him.

On an aside note, when I was in the Atlanta airport, they had customs walking around with Beagles. I said to my buddy, like what the hell, the Dobermans were out for the day, he said, they probably scare the people too much.... I'm like big whoop, don't bring drugs in the country then. We then observed the beagle in action. He started sniffing this carryon, I was like wow, bingo. Then the customs guy said in his tough guy voice "What food do you have in here?" I then renamed the beagle the bagel sniffing beagle.

Once during a health and welfare inspection at Ft. Benning, we brought in the drug dogs. One keyed on a wall locker and we started taking it apart. The kid whose locker it was sat in the corner crying so we figured we had something. The dog kept getting more excited the farther in we got, until we got to the kid's stash of ......Hershey bars. The dog went nuts, wrappers flying all over the place, the handler trying to drag him away. It was anticlimactic, to say the least.

I must admit I never saw anything like that before. :lmao:

We worked with about 10 land sharks when we were doing some CD training at Campbell and when the handlers let them start doing their thing everyone backed off -- we were all scared of them. Man they were intense!

I saw a demonstration at Ft. Gordon several years ago of some of the working dogs, the ones trained to react, not act on command. We were briefed beforehand about not making any sudden moves or the dogs would attack and there was not much they could do about it. Sadly, these dogs had a career of only about 5 years, and had to be euthanized at the end because they were too dangerous to be adopted. Their handlers were lifelong partners for them - if the handler separated from the service, the dog was finished.
