I found this today and thought you'd be interested:

I got a chance to see the new Jack Sparrow, Pirate Tutorial that
started today at the Magic Kingdom. They do it just in front of the
attraction and probably will move over by the new sign once it opens in
a few weeks. Its a cute little show with Jack Sparrow, oops, I mean
CAPT Jack ( you are not allowed to use his name due to copyrights) and
his partner. They bring kids up and do a cute little show.

He does NOT do photos or sign autographs.

Just an FYI the one today looked JUST like Jonny D himself!!!

So when it says he doesn't do pictures, I take it you can take pictures of the show, he just won't stop and take pictures with guests???

Also, What name can they not use because of copyright? I'm confused....

You never know.

Right, he does not stay for photos/autographs but you can certainly take pictures of the show.

I guess they cannot use his name from the movie; Jack Sparrow, so they call him Captain Jack at WDW.

The ride, the music, the name, the character, the costume, the movie, the you-name-it... all belong to Disney, so its not a copyright problem that cause him to be called "Capt. Jack".

I imagine its because its just a term of "familiarity" (like calling him UNCLE Jack).

You don't usually call your Uncle, "Uncle Joe Smith"... its just "Uncle Joe".

And, in terms of names for those of "rank", "Capt. Sparrow" is far too "formal" and impersonal... so I'd think "Capt. Jack" is just a friendly name for the character.

Just my theory.

Yes, Disney owns the ride but I believe that Jerry Bruckheimer owns the film, and Mr. Jack Sparrow and owns the trademarks.

There is a thread about this here:

Also, a video is available here:

I must disagree, the guy does not look very much like Johnny Depp, although some may be fooled from a distance. He looks like Jack Sparrow, though! Also, they do call him Jack Sparrow in the show. :thumbsup2

edit: It appears that yesterday was the soft opening and the show will continue (at least) through December 31st! :bounce:

Who do you think works for WHOM?
:goodvibes

"Pirates of the Carribbean: (whichever)"
Is a "Walt Diney Pictures" production and Disney has all rights reserved for themselves.

http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/pirates/

Jerry Bruckheimer, as executive producer, does not necessarily mean HE "owns the rights".

These kind of things get very convoluted to resolve.

Its easier to understand if we look at Pixar and Disney.
Even when PIXAR was a separate company from Disney, all of the CHARACTERS and "titles" of the "joint productions" (Toy Story, Bug's Life, etc.) were under the ownership of Disney in perpetuity.

Even if Pixar had fully SPLIT from Disney (as was predicted to be happening before the current Disney Mgt. came aboard) Pixar could no longer make, say, Toy Story III... but Disney could have... without Pixar (and, from many sources, they were actually PLANNING to do it.)

Not really worth all this bandwidth, but, in general, Disney is very conscious of its characters and will "hold on to them" tighter than most any other company. ;)

You win. I actually don't really care. I was only posting a review of the show.

Re: Naming Restrictions...

While Disney owns most of the stuff, it has been posted in recent months regarding the POTC ride refurbishment that Disney could not change the name of the Pirate ship in the ride to "Black Pearl" because of a copyright problem involving Jerry Bruckheimer. Just sayin'...

In the end, we all know the true names for the ride and the characters. :)

Thanks so much beattyfamily for posting this :thumbsup2

I just love the POTC ride, the movie and especially Johnny Depp :lovestruc
I mean Capt. Jack pirate:

Thanks again :disrocks:

He's not signing autographs or meeting or greeting? Awww! Well, maybe that will change at some point! I can hope! :cloud9:

Not yet, although they do pull some children from the crowd for a 'sword fighting tutorial'. He runs away through the crowd as soon as he is done. Download the video (mentioned above) to see it for yourself! :thumbsup2

Then how come in the downloaded video from WDW does his sidekick refer to him as Captain Jack Sparrow a few times?????

You have to give Disney credit that they really want to keep the guests entertained.
A year ago we went on the VMK tour. There is a similar character in VMK, and I think they may call him Captn Jack, or something like that -- not quite exactly as he is titled in the movie.
As a trivia question, I answered Capt Jack Sparrow. And the tour guide made sure to correct me and say they purposely did not use the Capt Jack Sparrow name from the movie. I don't recall if he said why though.

Okay, okay, I can settle the name issue of Capt. Jack. . . . let's just call him for all intents and purposes. . .

The tour guide may have mentioned that, but they are calling him by the full name (Captain Jack Sparrow) during the show. :confused3
