I tried to synch my iPhone (3GS) this morning and was invited to download the new software.

I clicked yes and then was advised that I had "purchased music on the iPhone that needed to be transferred to the itunes library and did I want to continue with the installation of the new software?"

I did NOT install the new software because I did not understand the warning box. Should I go forward despite the warning or should I transfer purchased music to the itunes library? If so, how do I do that in that I presumed this was done automatically?

Any advice is always appreciated.

iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
2010-04-14 18:42:18 GMT
Products Affected
iTunes Store, iPhone, iTunes, iPod
Introduction

If you purchased items from the iTunes Store and the only place you have them stored is on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, you can transfer them to any computer that is authorized for your iTunes Store account. This feature adds an extra layer of protection against losing your valued purchases.
How To

If you want to transfer iTunes Store purchases from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer, be sure to authorize the computer before connecting the device. To authorize, follow these steps:

1. Open iTunes.
2. From the Store menu, choose Authorize Computer.
3. In the dialog that appears, the Apple ID button is selected by default. If you have an AOL account, select AOL.
4. Enter your Apple ID or AOL screen name and password, then click the Authorize button.

If the iTunes Store purchases on your device were purchased with multiple accounts, you will need to authorize the computer for each one.

To transfer iTunes Store purchases from your device to a computer, follow these steps:

1. Connect your device to the computer. If it is synced with another iTunes library, the following dialog may appear:

the ipod is synced with another itunes library
2. Click the Transfer Purchases button.

Important: Clicking Erase and Sync will delete any existing content currently on your device. The content will be replaced with whatever existing content is in the current iTunes library your device is connected to. If there is no content in the iTunes library, nothing will be synced to your device, and your device will be empty.

iTunes will begin copying any purchases made with any account that the computer is authorized for.

If when you connect your device you are not prompted by the dialog above, it could be that the option "Do not ask me again" was previously selected. Fortunately, there are two more ways you can copy your purchases from your device.

After connecting your device to the computer and its icon appears in iTunes, you can choose Transfer Purchases from "Your device name" from the File menu.

Or, you can right-click (Windows or Mac) or Control-click (Mac only) your device in the iTunes Source list, then choose Transfer Purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.

Please note that this feature only works for items that were purchased on the iTunes Store. Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library.

My wife's phone gave her the same message. We synched, we used the top menu to transfer purchased music from the phone, etc. We then tried the update again and got the same message. Knowing that there was nothing on it that had not been transferred, however, we just said yes and went ahead with the update. We always purchase music straight from iTunes, not on our phones, and any Apps we have are all updated and in iTunes as well, so I have no idea why the message was there. We haven't seen anything missing.

I had the same experience. I had learned here on the DIS Boards to make sure I'd synched the purchases I'd made on my phone (apps, music, etc.) back to iTunes before I upgraded the software because someone had lost all of their apps by not doing so. I'd forgotten though, so I was glad to get the warning. I did it (following the process above). However, even though I had done it, I got the same warning a second time. I knew I was "in the clear," so I proceeded.

I updated my phone last night and got the same message. I was confused at first as I rarely buy things from iTunes on my phone as I prefer to buy it on my computer and transfer it later. But after taking their advice to transfer my purchases I learned that "purchased music" includes any audio content you've downloaded straight to your iPhone, even free things like podcasts!

Thanks again for the advice.

We are going to Italy this Saturday. FIrst time in Europe and in anticipation of the long flight to and fro I thought I'd try to download some rental movies for the iPhone and for the ipod I have. My DW is not much of an ipod / phone person but I thought we would enjoy this.

Downloaded 3 rentals to the iPhone. It took a long time but not a problem. However, these would not download to the ipod. On the one hand it is not the end of the world. We will just switch off, Lord knows I will NOT be watching "Under the Tuscan Sun" but my wife will:).

But I do wonder why this is so.

Any ideas? Is it because I rented instead of bought?

Onto a separate iPod and not your iPhone right? If so, what type is it and how old is it? I know older generations of iPods aren't compatible with rentals because of copyright protection issues. I found that out right before a trip overseas two years ago when I wanted to rent movies to watch on the flight.
