New iPad

I looks very good. The display resolution is much better, the (now 4G) cellular data service can theoretically run about 3X faster than by FIOS connection at home. The hardware has been beefed up to handle the bigger display. It can also be used as a mobile hotspot with an approved data plan from your cell carrier of choice.

The form factor stays the same, which I know caused some negative feelings regarding the iPhone 4S. The weight is up a bit (about a tenth of a pound), but that may not matter, and it is a little thicker.

The price stays the same, for better stuff. Usually a good direction in which to head.

I have the 1st gen iPad and waffled all afternoon on which one to get - ended up ordering the new iPad along with the new Apple TV to replace my older one. Can't wait for March 16th now.

Thoughts on getting the iPad 3 or the iPad 2 for $100 less?

I've had the iPad 2 for about 8 months now and am very happy with it. Don't find the current display to be lacking in any way so I don't know how the increased resolution would improve things. Maybe I just need to see one in operation.

I got the 64Gig 3G version and it does anything I need it to do, including holding a bunch of movies for those frequent flights to WDW.

My iPad 2 does everything (and more) than I need it to do so I see no reason to upgrade. Pretty much everyone in my office that has one said the same thing.

Could this be the start of Apple hitting a point where people won't be upgrading unless there is a significant reason to? I think we will see lots of new buyers and iPad1 owners upgrading but but not many iPad2.

Apple TV released the software upgrade already so I will take care of that this weekend on our units.

Kelly, I see this step in the iPad line as similar to the half-step increases that have been occurring in the iPhone line. they went from 3 > 3s > 4 > 4s there. I've been skipping alternate increases on the phone and it seems like that's the path here as well.

I think more people will feel differently when they see the screen. The low res on my iPad 2 bugs me after having an iPhone 4.

The iPad 2 is a very capable device. It lacks the amazing screen resolution of the new iPad, the iPhone 4-equivalent camera, the 4G-LTE option, and some of the processing power of the new device, but if you are interested in, for example, a Wi-Fi only iPad, the iPad 2 might make more sense for you if your needs are (like mine with the iPad), web browsing, eBook reading, Facebook, and email. If you are on the road a lot, and dealing with large files and/or intensive graphics applications, the new iPad will clearly be a better buy, if not a necessity, especially in areas of 4G LTE coverage.

I have a Wi-Fi only iPad 2, and am happy with it for what it does, but the 4G option on the new iPad makes me glad that I didn't get a 3G model. I think I would be feeling the lack of the new cellular data network more, oddly enough, if I had a 3G already.

I have this iPad2 version as well and am very happy with it.
I doubt my eyes are sharp enough anymore to notice the difference. ;)

My husband noticed that while they are still offering the iPad 2- it's only the 16Gb version now- no more 32 or 64.
So if you want something with more capacity- you are going to have to choose the iPad 3. (at least if you are buying through Apple)

I'm also perfectly content with my iPad 2. There's nothing about the new one that even makes me consider upgrading.

I have the original iPad (or rather DW does), and we want to buy a second one. I've been on the fence between the iPad 2 and the new iPad. I'm going to wait to see the new iPad that they've ordered at work, but I think we'll probably go with the newer version. The potential to turn your iPad into a wifi hotspot as well as the display is what is pushing me in that direction.

I'm really interested in all of the comments so far. I have no issues with our iPad 1 - it's just so nice DW and I don't want to share!

I have an iPad "classic" and I wanted to get a "new" iPad, but couldn't come up with a reason. A better display is about all I see and the current display is fine for what I do.

I'd love to hear thoughts on this as well.
I kept saying I couldn't find a reason to get an iPad and now I have given up looking for a reason - I just want one. Now I have to choose between 2 and 3. Latest and greatest OR $100 discount?

Which one are you looking to get? Just wifi? If you want the cell data I'd go with the "new" iPad for the LTE. Otherwise the decision is if the better camera and display are worth the 100 bucks.

Ordered the new iPad for DFIL so will have a look to see whether it is worth upgrading :)
DW has the original iPad which might be worth upgrading whereas my iPad2 will still compete favourably with the new iPad :)

Thanks Don. I am just going to do the wifi - tether it with my phone and get a personal wifi router. I have wifi at home and work so I'll only need it for travel. So it really comes down to the display and camera, huh? Hmmmmm

I'm another "classic" iPad owner who is waffling with getting the iPad 3. My iPad does everything I want fine, and the differences that I would be interested in between the 1 and the 2 or 3, like the camera are on my iPhone 4. So I've talked myself out of it... for now... :confused3

Of course there is always the possibility of an iPad 4!:thumbsup2

My daughter has the iPad 2 and a birthday in a week. I don't quite understand how Apple TV works. Can someone explain it? It looks like you need to be home to use it but I believe Kevin said he used it in the hospital. Plus, is there ever a discount or is it always $100.

Apple TV is a small device that hooks up to your TV and allows you to connect to your home wireless network so you can stream iTunes movies to the TV. It also will stream from Netflix.

You can often find it in the refurb section of the Apple on-line store for $79. Perhaps even better now that Apple has announced version 3 of the ATV.
