LOL thanks - that's two of you then

Majesty, what I really need is for you to just tell me what camera to buy. I hate making decisions about stuff like this ;)

what I really need is for you to just tell me what camera to buy.

OK Nativetxn my dear, Zurg will be happy to help with a consultation.

What makes a camera comfortable for you to use?

  • Do you point and shoot or fiddle with lots of controls?

Do you worry that the camera is fragile and keep it safe or tote it everywhere?
How are you going to carry it - in a bag, in a pocket, on the stroller, around your neck?
Size - There are some way cool digital cameras the size of a deck of cards. Small cost more how important is size?
    Zoom - None, 3x 5x 10x?
Do you want to watch pictures on the TV in the hotel room?
How much are you going to spend, does price matter or did you win the lottery? (If the latter, Zurg is adoptable!)
How do you feel about connecting computer cables?
Do you already have electronic toys that have required a big investment in SmartMedia, Compact Flash or Memory Sticks?
Are you packing the laptop or will you be buying a lot of memory cards?

(Now all you lurkers out there need to remember that one camera doesn't fit all so what Zurgie recomends for her may not be the best fit for you too.)

Let me tell you what I have right now and can barely use:

Sony DSC F707 (10x zoom)--I know how to download the photos to my laptop, which I carry with me everywhere--also have all kinds of memory sticks. I love the quality of the photos but it is so large--too large for places like DIS meets or parties. Take it to a graduation or parade and you get awesome photos. It is a bit much for carrying around WDW. If I had grandchildren, I would suffer though ;)

I need something smaller for carrying around everywhere.

I also have a Sony 120x Digital Zoom Super Steady Shot Digital Handycam. Which I never use because I don't have grandchildren. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)

I do not know how to use all fancy stuff on either of these cameras but I've got them.

Obviously, price doesn't matter or I wouldn't have these two beauties.

In answer to your questions:

Do you point and shoot or fiddle with lots of controls? Point and shoot is my preferred method.

Do you worry that the camera is fragile and keep it safe or tote it everywhere? I used to tote the F707 everywhere but I want something smaller that I can carry every where, if I want.

How are you going to carry it - in a bag, in a pocket, on the stroller, around your neck? No stroller :( On a belt or shoulder strap? What do you recommend?

Size - There are some way cool digital cameras the size of a deck of cards. Small cost more how important is size? I want smaller but I don't suppose I need the size of a deck of cards

Zoom - None, 3x 5x 10x? I already have 10x, how about 5x? I don't know even 3x maybe? I think at least some sort of zoom.

Do you want to watch pictures on the TV in the hotel room? That sounds neat, don't know if I could learn how to do that, though.

How much are you going to spend, does price matter or did you win the lottery? (If the latter, Zurg is adoptable!) I didn't win the lottery. I say price doesn't matter but I imagine my husband could disagree with that sentiment

How do you feel about connecting computer cables? If you think I could learn how to do that, I suppose I'm willing to try--I am not good taking a manual and teaching myself computer stuff, though

Do you already have electronic toys that have required a big investment in SmartMedia, Compact Flash or Memory Sticks? I don't know, do I? I have some memory sticks, I don't know what SmartMedia is and is a compact flash like a flash for taking pictures inside?

Are you packing the laptop or will you be buying a lot of memory cards? Both :teeth:

Thank you Majesty for helping me with this :)

OK Nativetxn here we go:

Point & Shoot (with ability to do more if you want)
Easy to carry around
Have Memory sticks. (was leaning to a Canon untill I heard you had sticks - see it pays to ask!)

For you I like the Sony P72 3.2 mega pixel (or p92 for 5 mega pixel)

It is small but delivers good pictures Has new movie technology for when you need it. You will carry this and put the other cameras on ebay. Now I don't see much need for a picture above 3 mega pixels other than cropping them down and effectively "Zooming" more. If that floats you boat go for the p92 (I couldn't find a review of the P92) on the other side of the coin you use up the memory a lot faster with 5mp than with 3.

This camera uses regular rechargeable AA batteries so in a jam (say the parade is about to start) and you battery dies you can buy AA and run the camera.

Coming in second are the P8 and P10 from Sony.

Slightly smaller cameras but use proprietary Sony batteries. Now Sony makes the best (and you may have some already) proprietary battery system but they are still proprietary. No AA back up.

P8 is 3.2mp P10 is 5mp

I would get a USB Memory stick reader and load the pictures that way. If you get the P72 or p92 get more batteries.

Your not so humble Emperor
Zurg

Thank you for sharing your evil genius, Emperor!:) After I read your page, I realized that my camera will never do what I want it to do and now I am shopping for a better camera. Do you own stock in any of the companies by chance?:p

Do you own stock in any of the companies by chance?

No way! Zurg's has journalistic integrity. I do not invest in any of the firms I cover. (I have kids - I can't afford investments!)

However, as an Evil Emperor, I am willing to take bribes from them. (Hello Canon a Digital Rebel would go a long way to getting you some plugs. I was ever so close to suggesting a Canon A70 for Nativetxn but when I checked with UPS the Digital Rebel hadn't yet arrived so....)

LOL! Thanks for the consultation, Majesty.

My Pleasure.

Least I can do for someone who's big post count is legit.

I got the Sony p92. I love it. It is small and easy to carry and takes great photos.
