I just came back from a week-long stay at this property. I posted a review on TripAdvisor:
The Hyatt Place at Anaheim Resort/Convention Center is a brand new hotel located within a (longish) walk from
Disneyland. I stayed seven nights at this property in October. Overall my stay was good but there were some negatives and some kinks that need to be worked out.
ABOUT REVIEWER:
I am a frequent visitor to the Disneyland area and in the vicinity of the Hyatt Place I have stayed previously at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort, and at the Red Lion Hotel Anaheim. I stay in hotels for about two months of the year, including at many Hyatt and Starwood properties. I have stayed at the Hyatt Place Waikiki in Honolulu, and the theming is carried through the chain very well (look, feel, sound, and even smell is comparable).
LOCATION:
The Hyatt Place at Anaheim Resort/Convention Center is located on the west side of Harbor Blvd., between W. Convention Way and Orangewood Ave. It is sandwiched between Clarion Hotel Anaheim Resort to the north and the Courtyard Anaheim at Disneyland Resort to the south. Across the street is Disneyland's Toy Story Parking Lot (see below for importance).
PARKING:
Self-park is charged at $16/night, which is highway robbery but also par for the course for many hotels in the Disneyland area. There are a limited number of surface parking spots and a single level underground parking structure below the hotel. The two elevators in the parking structure are the same as the ones in use by the hotel itself, so it is very convenient to access the room from the parkade.
ACCESS TO DISNEYLAND:
Depending how fast you walk and the timing of the traffic signals, it would take an average person about 15-20 minutes to walk to the street entrance of the Disneyland Resort. There is also the Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART) shuttle that can take you to Disneyland for $5/day. However, the best FREE and EASY way to get to Disneyland is to walk north to W Convention Way, cross Harbor Blvd at the traffic light, and then walk into the Toy Story Parking Lot. There is continuous shuttle service to and from this parking lot that will take you to the main entrance of the Disneyland Resort and the cost is free and the waiting is none, as there are always shuttles waiting for passengers.
LOBBY:
The usual Hyatt Place green apples were available as were three workstations (Mac and PC) connected to a printer.
CHECK-IN:
As mentioned by other reviewers, the staff at this hotel are young, eager to help, and friendly. I was greeted with a smile, thanked for being a Hyatt Gold Passport member, and processed quickly. Luggage carts were plentiful and located by the front entrance.
ROOM ASSIGNMENT:
Unfortunately, the room assignment was suboptimal. I received a room across the hall from the ice machine which would drop ice and make noise even when nobody was getting ice. Additionally, I had a connecting door which was fine when there was no neighbor, but when there was an occupant through that connecting door every little noise could be heard as if there were no barrier at all. I needed to call the Front Desk at 1:00am on the Friday night due to excessive noise from the clueless neighbors who were staying on the other side of that connecting door. I would not have thought a new hotel such as this property would have sound barrier issues.
ROOM:
Our room was spacious and had two queen size beds as well as a sofa bed. The television with DIRECTV had many channels. There was adequate storage with numerous drawers and a tall armoire. The single pull-down blind (roller shade) was not effective in blocking incoming light, as lots of light would creep in through the top valance. i would have much preferred having proper traditional curtains. The HVAC system was surprisingly loud for a new hotel and would blow at high volume every time it was triggered by the thermostat. In the bathroom, the bathtub stopper was not functioning (could not hold the water) and therefore one could not draw water for a bath. I called and requested to have this scheduled for repair the following day, which I was assured would happen after we left the room for the day. In actual fact, no repair was performed and I had to call again, after which the stopper was finally repaired. Additionally, the toilet chain kept coming off after flushing, which was surprising given that this was a brand new Kohler toilet. I didn't even bother calling about this, and just reattached the chain with each flush.
WI-FI:
This was free and generally quite speedy, but kept cutting in and out on my laptop.
HOUSEKEEPING:
Being used to the Hyatt Regency standard of housekeeping, the housekeeping at this Hyatt Place was disappointing. Shampoo and conditioner were not replenished regularly. Neither the counter nor the bath tub were thoroughly cleaned each day (hair and residue still present). As mentioned above, the stopper for the drain on the bathtub was not functioning correctly, yet this was either not noticed or not reported by housekeeping. One day for inexplicable reasons housekeeping never came at all! The hotel is new now, but with this level of cleaning it will likely feel old and dirty very quickly.
BREAKFAST:
I took breakfast in the hotel six of the seven mornings. For beverages, coffee and tea (hard to find regular teabags - mainly herbal), milk, and juices (apple, orange, tomato) were available. There was a variety of baked goods including English muffins, white or brown sliced bread, and bagels. The clear plastic containers for these were annoyingly very difficult to open and close. Small donuts and other sweet pastries would generally be available as well. Spreads included a variety of jams and peanut butter. Fresh cut up fruits were always only grapefruit or mixed fruit (melons, grapes, oranges). In general, there were several displays of apples, oranges, and bananas. Hot entrees included scrambled eggs either plain or with cut-up breakfast sausages and cheese (only on one day was it with ground beef instead), pancakes or French toast, and breakfast sausages (no other protein choice was noted over the week of my stay). Yogurt (strawberry only, and in a large bowl instead of individual servings) a selection of cereals, and oatmeal were also available.
For the price paid (free), one could hardly complain about this great selection and quality for breakfast. However, the breakfast could have been done a lot better. First off, there was never enough staff. The tables could not be cleared in time and most days there were tables left unwiped and/or with dirty dishes for a long time. The same hard-working staff is responsible for bringing out the non-skillet items, so they were so busy that food could not be replenished in time at peak hours. The baked goods were often half empty, fruit and yogurt would be unavailable, and sometimes the display would run out of cereal. On one occasion there were no creamers for the beverages. On the busiest day, Saturday, the breakfast was scaled back significantly, as if on purpose for budgetary reasons. i think this reflects poorly on this property that they do not maintain the Hyatt Place standard every single day. There were no whole fruits anywhere to be found (the displays were conspicuously missing), only plain scrambled eggs, and no donuts were on offer. Pretty much nothing could be replenished in time (most of the serving bowls were actually empty). Finally, disappointingly the Signature Breakfast Sandwiches (often pictured on the Hyatt Place website as part of the free a.m. Skillet Breakfast) are NOT available free of charge at this location! One has order these from the kitchen and pay.
SUMMARY:
Overall a good stay and I can recommend this property despite the aforementioned deficiencies. I could have gotten the same rate at the more upscale Sheraton down the street but the draw of free breakfast and internet, brand new hotel, and my previous positive experience at another Hyatt Place led me to this hotel and I would stay again.
