Hello
I am a 33 yr old mom of 4. I live on a dairy farm in central NY. I am really really overweight. I have been for many years and no diets, exercise or doctor has been able to help me. This January I was diagnosed(FINALLY) with a hormonal/metabolic disorder. The dr claims that this is the reason for my inability to loose.
I truthfully have lost faith it what the dr says...I have seen many many of them with no effect. BUT I am willing to give his plan a try. I am now on medication(similar to birthcontrol pills) to "reset" my hormones.
After a lot of research I discovered that it is recommended that I proceed with a low carb diet(but NOT atkins as I need fresh fruit..so I am stumped)
I thought perhaps a 2 week induction then add fruit back in...but I am not sure? I have heard whispers on The South Beach Diet may work.
Has any of you every tried it?
I am scared to take the plunge into Low Carb(did this several years ago) because I feel I have to 'eat different' from the rest of my family. I went into my pantry today and realized its all pasta, crackers, cereal, baked item, breads.......sheesh I could not find ANYtHING low carb...
I remember my biggest issue being breakfast. I am not a big eater in the morning and eggs sound gross when I wake up. Maybe protien shakes? Any help, encouragement or advice you could give would be greatly apprecaited!

I have a family reunion(have not seen some in 10 yrs) next week and I am sooooooooooooooooo depressed about stunning them with my size. I ordered the reunion tshirts and I am the only woman XXL! Most are smalls and mediums so I will feel even bigger!!
We are going to Disney again in December and I would love to be a few sizes smaller!!! For once I would like to enjoy shopping with my teenage daughter!

Sorry to sound so down but I feel this is it for me.....I am tired of living my life by what diet I am on. I want to think of other things!

TIA

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to WISH and I am so glad that you found us. I know you can do it!!!

Join us in the WISH challenge! You will be amazed how these girls can motivate!

If it's recommended that you do low carb (but not atkins), I would do one of two things. Do South Beach (but parts of this are a little confusing because the book is so vague), or do Weight Watchers with low carbs. The reason I like Weight Watchers is that it has taught me what normal portions are, and how much food I need for my body.

I go to meetings, but some don't. It depends on if you need that accountability. It really sounds like you are ready to do this! If you decide to do Weight Watchers, you can PM me and I can help you get some information to get started, and help you with some of the food lists etc.

If you go to prevention.com you can do a search on the South Beach diet and get a short synopsis about how that works. I really do think it's possible though to do weight watchers and eat lower carbs.

Again welcome to wish. We are here for you!

Good luck,
Melanie

Hey mom2!
Welcome to WISH! We're glad you're here.

I have PM'd you. :)

Welcome to WISH, Kelly! I'm really glad that you have found us now! You will find loads of support and good advice here, All the WISH'ers here are fantastic!

I am not a low carb'er, but there are plenty of folks here who are. I'm sure you will get lots of sound advice on that front!

Go to that family reunion with your head held high! You have taken an important first step in deciding to lose weight! By the time you are at the reunion, you will have decided on your weight loss plan and will be on your way to success!!

I also like your goals: being lighter by the time you go to WDW (one of my goals, also) and shopping with your teenage daughter. Work toward those goals!

Check in often and let us know how you are doing!:D

Hi again

Thanks for the warm welcome! I wondered how you join your challenges?

mom2smjn I'm so glad to see you here! Sounds like you have had quite a bit of frustration for quite a while, sweetie. I sure hope the new meds and the new eating plan can help you get back on the road to good health. Your new WISH friends are going to help you too.

To take the challenge you need to post to our WISH challenge thread. You will find that right HERE. That makes you an official WISHer.

Then, if you choose, you may add our WISH member clipart. There is a post telling you how to do that right HERE. What we do is start with a zero loss no matter how much weight we may have lost before taking the challenge, then each time we lose 5 pounds we get to "trade up" to a new clipart. Very motivating.

I think you are going to like it here. The WISH support group is just the greatest group of losers you could ever hope to meet. They have all been such a help to me. If you every need information or advice or support or if you just want to talk, we'll be here for you. All we ask in return is that you be here to help us if we ask for help. It's a pretty nice little set up :)

I am going to guess that your physician wants you to eat very few refined carbohydrates, meaning sugar, bread, pasta, crackers, corn starch, etc. It's tough giving up those things for the first few days but you won't have any trouble once you get them out of your system.

I'm just tickled that you are going to be part of my support group now. You're going to do just great, I'm sure of it!

Katholyn

Hi .. and welcome to WISH ! Congratulations on your decision to lose weight. I'm a total carbo-holic, so unfortunately I cannot offer you any advice on low carbs. One thing I have learned, besides drinking my water, is that diet (in whatever form you choose) works so much better when you combine it with some daily exercise. I just got in from a 30 minute walk so I decided to come visit WISH while I consume some water :)

Glad to have you here as part of our support group. Please post often and let us know what plan you have decided on.

Mary Liz

Welcome!!
I'm doing Weight Watchers online and really enjoying it. I thought it would be complicated, but it's been suprisingly easy. As other have suggested there is a low carb option that you might want to look in to. Don't be discouraged. Just keep posting here for all the support you could ever wish for. Good luck and happy losing!!!

Hello! mom2smjn! I think I know how you feel about the "XXL" t-shirt and seeing family you haven't seen in awhile.
I justed wanted to support/cheer you on in whatever weight-loss method is best for you.
Hang in there!
Margaret

Adding my hello and welcome! Good to have you here! Hope you stick around and post often - and please know that YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!! :) :) :)
