New here and in shock I am posting here

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hellow folks! This will be our first trip to Disneyw ith our 10 year old. I am 43years old and until 5 1/2 months ago was in good health. Then I herniated a cervical disk in my neck/spine which triggered a rapid decline in a half dozen other serious health matters. Its been a long hard road to recovery. We are planning our trip in Novmber so I have time to recover more (having hand surgery next week, epidural blocks in neck, etc).

I know many of the rides are not recomended for people with neck injuries and printed out a list with the restrictions I am so bummed since this is MY first trip. I am also sort of worried about walking all those long distances. Someone suggeted renting a wheelchair or scooter if I get in pain from all the schlepping. I am a bit embarassed to do this since beig impared and not doing everything is new to me. How is this done? Is it true it gets you to the front of the line faster? I am really hoping that by November I am in the best shape of my life for all the walking, but I also want to be prepared just in case.

Thanks for the help.

In most cases, w/c and scooter (ECV) users wait in line like everyone else. There are some older attractions, mostly at Magic Kingdom, that require w/c and ECVs to use an alternate entrance. Even so, the wait time is usually the same, if not longer, than if you wait in the regular queue.

If you feel the need to get a w/c or ECV by all means, do so...you can't enjoy yourself if you are in pain from walking too much.

::yes::
agreeing with what Chuck posted.
most of the lines are accessible, and in most cases you will be in line with everyone else.

If you want information about renting wheelchairs and ECVs, check out the disABILITIES FAQs thread. There is lots of information there.

Hundreds of people are in WC's and ECV's - you won't look like a sore thumb, trust me.

Thank you all for the helpful information and Get Well Pixie Dust. I am hoping to be well by November when we go on our trip but at the same time I am also trying to accept my limitations.

Dixie dust to all!!!

Sorry to hear about your back problems, but agree with everyone else to get the ECV if you need one. My dad has back/neck problems, but refused to get one because he was too "proud" to do it. After 2 days, he was miserable and it sort of ruined the rest of his trip (We saw the Hall of Presidents several times after that because he enjoyed being able to sit!)

I'm sorry to hear about your health issues and hope that you feel better by november. (Also wondering if you're the same Lippylulu from FRUA. :) If so, nice to "see" a familiar face over here.)

I'm sorry you're in pain. I've had two surgeries on my neck. The first in 03 for a disceptomy (sp), then in January of this year had another for a two level disc fusion. I agree, the back pain jsut continues down the back.

As far as the ECV, I aslo have too much pride to get one, my DH already calls me "sensitive or weakling" (I know, he can be a horses behind) but it also hurts to sit for too long due to lumbar herneations. I would suggest taking several breaks in a cool area and people watch for a few minutes. It really helps me refuel.

I really hope you continue to improve and you feel better by November.

Hi Kim!! Yes its me from FRUA!!! I guess you understand how special this trip will be for us! Its dd's first Disney trip. She has been home with us 1 1/2 years. It happens to be MY first trip to Disney too. Thank goodness this mess with my health didn't happen 2 years ago...I'd never get past the medicals!

LOL! The way things appear to be going, soon *none* of us will be able to get past the medicals!

Seriously though, I hope you and your DD have a wonderful trip to Disney World. You definitely deserve it! :)
