veteran dvc owners , what do you think the points or cost will be for the new hawaii dvc resort. do you think a nonmember just buying in at that time will have a chance to buy in or will members scoop it up like beach club, which I had heard was sold out right away.

I imagine by the time it finally begins selling, there will be plenty of points available to new DVC members. I foresee current members who are interested in DVC Hawaii will be doing a smaller add-on in order to make the trip every other year or so (Except for many west coasters who make the trip every year). I really don't think it will sell out very fast.

where is the 2011 hawaii resort to be at again I forgot? have you stayed in any of the marriotts in hawaii? I am thinking about buying the dvc hawaii but may not be able to vacation there but every 3 years, would this work. Or is it better to buy okw or so and use your points to go to maui dvc?

I hope the points/night are not so high. DH and I would like to go there for our 25th anniversary in 2013.

Blech - those western coast locations are B- quality compared to the prime resorts spots elsewhere on Oahu, Kauai or Maui. I really wish Disney had spent the bucks and gotten a better location. Kauai in particular would have been a better option; much more lush and a lot less commercialized than Oahu and even Maui.

But it's still better than sitting home in Maryland!:rotfl:

(BTW - to each his own - Maui is our fav while Kauai is our least fav of all of them....the Big Island and Oahu are somewhere inbetween and we usually only spend 2 or 3 n on those islands...)

OP - I'm just gonna sling a wild guess out there that since the resort isn't due to open until 2011 we still have to get thru price increases for at least the next couple of years before they start selling...my official guesstimate on the starting price is $110 / point if they start selling in 2 years.

I think the Ko'Olina area is quite beautiful and away from the craziness that is Waikiki and Honolulu, but we all have our own tastes. And FWIW, I think Disney is testing the waters with the Hawaii DVC and putting it on the most visited Hawaiian Island: Oahu. If it is successful enough, I could foresee DVC resorts on Maui and Kaui or even the Big Island in the future.

I've never been to any of the other Islands, but we drove all around Oahu and thought it was beautiful! I think I'd prefer something that was not so inhabited and commercial. I could not believe all the homeless and prostitutes that were in Waikiki the last time I was there!

I haven't stayed in any Marriott in Hawaii, but I have stayed in a Marriott property in the Florida Keys! It was very nice, although I don't think it was a timeshare.

I did stay in two different units of the Hilton Grand Vacations Waikiki. I stayed in a 2 bedroom unit and a studio. Both were very nice!

I don't know what would be better to do. I think someone else on these boards probably have more experience with that sort of stuff! I'm relatively a newbie compared to many!:goodvibes

I think every major city in our country has its own share of social problems, but I understand what you are saying. Honolulu is urbanized. Not all areas of Oahu are like that, and the Ko'Olina resort area is far enough away from the center of that craziness. Its about 20 miles away from downtown Honolulu, which considering the size of the island, is a fair distance. I think Oahu was chosen to host the first Hawaiian DVC because it is the most visited island here. For many folks, if they could only make a trip to Hawaii once in their lifetime and could visit only one island, the vast majority would pick Oahu. They are definitely going to be using the Hawaii DVC as a selling point for the other DVC resorts that are currently selling and those being sold in the future. After all, even if you don't own points there, you could always book a vacation in Hawaii using your DVC points at 7 months out...

Agreed about the Kauai part - absolutely beautiful. We used to live in Kalaheo and everything I remember was great about it (except Hurricane Iwa - boy that one took us by surprise). Oahu was ok...but this is just my opinion.

But with all the california people going there often, the holidays may not be able to be yours with a 7 month window. it may only be possible if you own with the 11 month window. To enjoy hawaii you need more than a week, so for those people tied to school schedule, christmas may only be possible if you own.

I am very tempted to buy50 point in Cali and 50 points in Hawaii for a fun trip every 3 years or so!

I've stayed at the Marriott Ko'Olina and I prefer it to Waikiki area but I really don't like the city much so, I'm biased. If you want click this link to see pictures of the resort and area:

It is very nice and quite. We had a great time there and can't wait to go back. I thought it was close to everything. We had a car which was nice because we were able to drive around the island.

Don't worry - there will be tons of points available for non-members. With normal price increases, I'd agree with the $110/point neighborhood.
