New furniture?

Hypothetically speaking....

if you were downsizing from a house to a 2 bedroom apartment and buying all new furniture, where would you shop? And since this IS the budget board, it should at least be somewhat budget-friendly ;)

we bought a lot of our furniture at Bob's. The ads are really cheesy and annoying but the furniture is actually good quality for the price and they have a nice selection. We've had everything a few years now and have been really happy so far. I felt like it was similar in price to Ikea but you don't need to put anything together!

I don't buy new furniture. I went to an auction yesterday and got a couch, loveseat, and 2 chairs for $235. It was for a non-smoking home and a family I knew. The older couple is moving to a smaller house.

Good to hear the positive feedback on Bob's since it's one of the places we've looked :thumbsup2 And I definitely don't want to have to assemble anything, either! :scared1:

Do you remember how long you had to wait for delivery?

Well, in this case I'd be the "older couple" you bought your furniture from since it involves moving to a smaller place! :lmao:

IKEA! Not sure if there is one near you, but I love it. Great quality and prices!

Ikea is my DD (24)'s pick and we have one nearby... but I was under the impression that the furniture needs assembly... is that that the case?

It depends on what you buy, but in general, yes, the furniture does need to be put together. However, you if you are talking sofas and loveseats, those generally have minimal put together parts -screw legs on, add slip covers etc.

We really love Ikea for value, and we have had no quality issues (we have 4 kids so items in our home are used hard). I also really like that I can freshen my decor with some contemporary touches for a reasonable cost.

Sure some items will be better than others. The great thing is that you can walk around the store (something we all enjoy) and figure out what will work for you.

A benefit since you are downsizing is that the furniture tends to be smaller scale and perfect for apartment living.

We are finally settling in to our new home in Washington State; we moved from Michigan at the end of 2011. We left a very large percentage of our big furniture behind; moving costs were too high. What I have been doing is going on www.craigslist.org. Find your city, and search the for-sale furniture ads. I got a beautiful computer desk/hutch with a faux-marbly looking top, that has one scratch on top of the hutch, for $10 yesterday. Ten dollars! The one I sold before we left MI was only slightly larger and had a drawer, and I paid $250 for that.

If you really want to go budget and get nicer things than the must-be-assembled-furniture, start on craigslist. :woohoo:

I love doing this, but what about bugs?

We don't have much trouble with bed bug around here. But my mom checked them out first and she is super picky.
I even got two extra cushions - they look brand new and were from the company- Lane (still in the box)
Now I have "New' stuff and don't have to fuss at my boys all the time to be careful.

If you're in New Jersey there should be a Raymour and Flannigan nearby. that's where we like to get our furniture from, and you get it delivered (usually) within 3 days, no assembly required. I know that they are having Memorial Day sales as we speak, prices are pretty reasonable when you get a sale but their quality is worth paying a little extra. ( you want it to last awhile!!)

I'm with you. I would not buy used furniture these days. The cost of getting rid of bugs could far exceed the savings realized on the furniture.

Stupid bedbugs ruining it for everyone. How does any one go antiquing these days?? :(((:sad1:

I hate assembling things too! Plus everything just seemed like better quality, similar to what you will find in any furniture store.

I don't really remember exactly but I don't think it was that long, a few weeks maybe and we wanted a Saturday delivery which was why it took longer. But it worked out with our schedule that way and everything was delivered the day we moved in. I think it depends on how busy they are and if the item is in stock, things like that.

If I were in this situation, I wouldn't mind buying low-impact stuff like end-tables, etc. at IKEA or similar.

But for things that get heavy use -- like the sofa, the dining room chairs, the bed -- I'd go to a top-quality place like Broyhill or Lazy Boy. For those things that are used every day, it's cheaper to get good stuff that'll last than to look at replacing it a few years down the road.

If you are looking to buy a one room or a few rooms of furniture, take a weekend trip to High Point, NC (if it is drivable). I haven't been in awhile, but whenever we want high-quality stuff at a good price, that's where we go....you'll save about 40% off regular retail (compared to places like Raymour & Flanigan's), even with delivery. If you're worried about quality, you'll find name-brands there (e.g., Broyhill).

The other place I love is the Pottery Barn Outlet...it can be hit or miss, but when you find what you need, great prices! BUT, you will need to transport it yourself (but that means no delivery charges!). It's great if you're looking for just 1 or 2 pieces.

Also, check Target...I got a few really sturdy, nice desks there!

Happy shopping!

OP, I see you're in NJ. If you're in the Central Jersey area I highly recommend Flemington Department Store and Ryder Furniture (just north of Princeton). Their prices are good especially for the quality they offer. They both will do their best to match competition prices and their customer service is excellent. They also offer great decorating advice. The majority of our furniture has come from one or the other.

I bought a couch and recliner from BIG LOTS- total cost about $500, and it is made by Simmons....nice, comfy- serves the purpose! I have 2 little boys, I will not spend a fortune on furniture.
