...the way non-New Englanders mispronounce town names?

I was just watching the end of an infomercial (waiting for the next show) and they were talking about seminars in WOE-burn (for those of you outside NE it's WOO-burn) and bill-a-REEK-a (it's really bill-RICK-a).

The other one I loved was, when I lived there, telemarketers used to call it DEAD-ham (DEAD-um).

Don't you think these people should do their homework?

I've been living in Massachusetts for over 6 years now and it's a wonder that any of the children here learn to spell correctly because none of you pronounce words the way they are spelled :p WAH-dah = water, for example. LOL

For the most part I try to pronounce the towns the way that the residents pronounce them, but I draw the line at saying "WIS-TAH" for "Worcestor". I say "Wooster". Close enough ;) Around here they say "QuinZy", I say "Quincy". Also, how about the city of New Orleans? People who live there say "Nawlins". Not too many non-residents pronounce it that way. It's not a big deal, in the grand scheme of things. I don't think it's a matter of people doing their homework or not. A person usually looks at a word and if they're even semi-literate, they can figure out how to pronounce it.

P.S. What's the deal with "buh-DAY-duh"?!??!!? ROFL (for those of you who don't know, that's how they pronounce the word "potato") :p

We can always tell a new anchor person or weather person as they are mispronouncing some of our cities.

LOL, thats so true.

And yes, if you are from Woburn, we actually say "Woobin".;)

How about Haverhill...Have-rill, not Haver-hill

When Home Depot was in their building boom a few years ago they would have these radio spots obviously done in their national headquarters. The one that stood out in my mind, was "Come check out the new Home Depot in Met-hewen" The actual town name is spelled Methuen, and pronounced Methewen"

Oh and Norah, don't forget the fun to be had with Hyannis :teeth:

When DH was in school....in St. Louis....the town of "Barn-stable" was discussed....and it brought him great amusement!!!

On snowy days school children always listen for no school announcements in "Fosta Glosta".....which is spelled Foster and Gloucester.

A few years back a guy called my work and asked me directions from WOR-CHEST-ER.

I asked him what state he was in! hahaha

Then I asked him to spell it. It was WOO-STER I told him. So funny.

We have a few towns close to us that people mis-pronounce all the time, but the ones that always stick the most are Wilkes-barre , pronounced Wilks-berry , yet they call it Wilks-bar , the other one is Moosic , pronounced Moosic , why do they call it Music ?
