:surfweb:So we are brand new DVC owners, 160pts at AKV with a June use year. we will be making our first trip this july, 8 nights, studio savannah view, 158 pts

So we have 2 pts left from the 2010 use year that they gave us when we joined, which If we dont use before next May (we wont) we loose them.

I made the ressies, to try to stay within 1 years worth of pts for our reservation. I guess this was a mistake sort of. I was not sure about borrowing points from the next year, but it seems to be the way to go

Im very unsure about the whole borrowing thing
If we had 160 from 2010, and borrowed pts from 2011 we could stay in a 1 bedroom standard view for 228(+32 fpr 8th night) at AKV or 244 for standard view 8 nights at BWV, borrowing a little more than half.

So by my math, we could borrow 1/2 each year and stay in nicer, bigger accomadations.

Is this smarter than trying to stay in the past years points each year?

it's up to you. you can borrow pts when you make the reservation at 11 months out and book a larger villa...OTOH, you'll run out of pts more quickly and have to skip a year or something. but if the bigger villa makes you happy, then go for it.

BTW, if you call now and book july with pts that you "get" in june 2011, then you are not borrowing pts, you are booking with "current" pts. you could have booked a july 2011 stay as early as last august with pts from june 2010, 2011 and borrowed from the allotment you would receive in june 2012.

edited to add: your june 2011 pts are valid for stays from june 1, 2011 to may 31, 2012. if you are booking a stay within that period, then you are using "current" pts. doesn't matter when you call to book.

more info about use year is here if you need it:

:surfweb:so if I use all of the prior year pts and just 1/2 or less of the current use year points (not borrowing from the following year) I should be able to have either longer stays or maybe nicer stays perpetually as I would always have 1/2 left over to bring to the next year?:cool1:

Ohhhh, extra points! My favorite!:goodvibes If I could--and you can--I would go for the bigger accommodations. We stayed there at Christmas last year, savannah view, and it was so much fun! You would have a washer and dryer, and a king sized bed, I am dying of envy here!:rotfl2: From our room we could see an area near Kadani that was marked off and men were trying to do something with planting some bushes, and the baby giraffe wouldn't let them!! Every time men drove in, the baby would push into the area, and they would try to push him out, and he was having none of that. We found out that baby giraffes don't push easily!:happytv: The men tried shaking plastic bags at the baby, blowing a cart horn at him, and pushing him, but that baby planned to watch what was being done at close range!:rotfl: We were entertained all week long!

If I read your post correctly, you are staying in July 11 using your 2010 points. You could've stayed in a larger unit and used all of your 2010 points and part of your 2011 points. You would then bank the rest of your 2011 points into 2012, and use the banked points and part of your 2012 points for your 2012 stay. Doing it that way, you would stay ahead with your points, unless you booked a really large room, or stayed extra nights to use up all of your extra points for a year.

:surfweb:CV, yeah, my "perpetual" post was wrong, eventually you would have to run out of extra points.

I need a math wiz to help me figure out how long I could make the extra use year pts last.

I'm in a constant state of borrowing from the next year, at this rate my contract ends in 2042 but I will be out of points in 2040. At the ripe old age of 78 I don't think I'll care! The future isn't promised to any of us so where vacation and DVC is concerned, I live for now!
