I'm one of those annoying people who only watched it *** David Tennent was in it. Doubt whether I'll carry on watching when he morphs into the new guy.

I fully agree with these, Tom Baker often called the best Doctor ( before David T ) was a total unknown actor before he became the Doctor and everyone said he doesnt look the part, he is all teeth and curls, he was the longest serving Doctor, Peter as an established actor, was a good Doctor, but with 'All creatures great and small' on at the same time it was confusing.

Yes DT has had other parts but he can play them different in a believable way, Peter Davison is always Peter Davidson what ever he is in.

The BBC had two options, you must remember they are cutting budgets on every show including Doctor Who, so there options were to pay mega money to an established actor, and then cut back on guest stars and CGI and sets, or go for a newer actor, less pay, (In line with the BBC DG's policy) and spend the money saved on better sets and CGI.

The show is stronger than the star, a bad actor can reduce ratings, but I think he will be as good as DT, presume they have him signed up for at least 2 to 3 seasons.

Plus the storylines by the newguy at helm have always been the best ones,and were true to the origanal doctor storys.will make for better viewing and might get away from harping on about rose

Lily Allen has emerged as the favourite to take on the role of The Doctor's assistant, -The Telegraph.

The show's bosses are reportedly eager to hire a showbusiness name to act alongside Matt Smith, as he is relatively unknown.

"Having got the casting of The Doctor out of the way, the companion role is where we will be looking next," said executive producer Piers Wenger.

"Someone terribly exciting like Billie Piper, who was at the beginning of her acting career but who had a profile for other reasons, would be great. We are looking for someone whose light can burn brightly.

"We would never cast anyone on the basis of their celebrity, but if Lily wanted to audition we would be delighted. It would be a lot of fun."

The singer was previously linked to the role in 2007, before it went to comedienne Catherine Tate.

Strictly Come Dancing stars Rachel Stevens and Kelly Brook are also reported to be in consideration for the part.

Well the series in 2010 will start in April, but I expect we will see at least Matt for a few mins at Christmas at the end of the two part special, but 'who' knows, he might pop up in one of the other specials.

Its a time wibbly wobbly type of thing.

can`t they just go down the same route as the doctor and get a non name.
That way they wont overshadow the new young doctor

I've never heard of him I'm sure the show will be great whoever is the Doctor
