I don't mind it, as long as its done right. I have been dogless at dog-friendly hotels and it was really a non-issue. I'm just confused as to why Disney is doing this? were tons of people staying offsite so they can bring their dogs? if all this is a response to Irma then that's really stupid on their part.

Personal thoughts here. I was there during Irma and while the acceptability and positivity was amazing I really really doubt Disney decided the night of and the day after the curfew was lifted (when I saw enough people actually leaving the resort by packing up their cars, etc though to be fair I was just at All-Star Sports) and said "let's allow dogs!!".

Irma could have been the catalyst but the cause I doubt. To me it seems like it could have been something on the table but not yet taken to the next level. I know some people have been told that "it was so great during Irma so Disney.." More than likely the CMs saying that are providing a reason for something that they may not be privy to the actual reason or what we used to be told at the call center "fake it til you make it".

*all just my opinion here and Disney could announce tomorrow that the sole reason they did this was Irma*

I’m not overly worried about this and I’m allergic to dogs, have a child that has asthma and is also allergic to dogs, and my son with autism is sincerely afraid of dogs. I figure it will be more of a production to bring and properly care for a dog on a vacation like Disney than it is to make arrangements to leave a dog under someone else’s care back at home or at a kennel; so the small percentage of those that do bring their pup will most likely be the type of owner that will be conscientious and responsible with this and I think Disney has taken all these issues into consideration as well (fingers/paws crossed ).

think part of the reason - was many guests were taking their pets as service dogs - service dogs must be allowed to stay with their person. Now I am pretty sure that most of these service dogs were real - but far too many times there was one who was definitely a pet.

so wdw changed their policy to allow dogs - except now you need to pay for it.

I am also allergy to dogs - if I touch one have to go wash hands and anything else that touched the dog. If I don't and forget to wash - then as soon as I touch my face or worst eat then sick.

Now should WDW allow dogs yes - but they also need to include cats!!!!

use to always only stay DVC or WDW - this quit when Spicey got sick. Tried to put him in the kennel (this was when there was one at FW) - but soon that stopped found a timeshare near by that accepted pets and start to stay there. Kept DVC and would stay one night at DVC - but most of the time would be in an offsite timeshare with Spicey. Found that offsite was inexpensive (compared to DVC or WDW). So even now will stay offsite.

besides you don't know who asked for this - lots of actors and other famous people bring their pets with them no matter where they go.

I’d be fine with cats too. I know it can very difficult to think about leaving behind a pet with chronic illness or an elderly pet. We struggled with this for years when we had both before WDW had this policy. We ended up taking much shorter trips b/c of this & even then it made us very anxious. I think even less ppl would take advantage of it if it allowed cats b/c most cats don’t travel well. My cat would have a stroke!

Spicey started to travel with me when he was still a kitten. I think he was barely 6 months old. My other cat at the time would have killed him if I left him with her. She hated him from day one. He was a fairly good traveler. He only fused when someone else was in the car. He was a little jealous.

I've loved the idea since day one! I love my dog, he goes with me almost everywhere. He even goes with me to work, and nobody ever notices him. He is potty trained and doesn't growl or bark...the people who do notice him fall in love with him. If I don't have him with me, people wonder why lol.

He’s so cute!

First hand report ...

Stayed at the BoardWalk, just got back. Had no clue at first about the new dog policy. Day 2 at mug refill station at the bakery....someone came breezing in with a medium sized dog on a leash...no "service dog" vest or anything. I was shocked. Nobody said a word. Day 3...early evening, saw someone walking their dog on the BoardWalk...watched for quite a while from my balcony, again, nobody said a word. Day 4, heard some talk around the pool about Disney's new dog policy. Day 6, saw a puppy on a leash INSIDE Animal Kingdom park....no "service dog" vest, no "in training" vest. Stopped at front desk at BoardWalk to inquire about the "rules" for dog owners. Nobody seemed to know, but was told they were not allowed on the BoardWalk....I told them what I saw..they didn't quite know what to say. Gave me the email address for guest services relations. Day 7....saw someone walking TWO medium size dogs on the BoardWalk....again, not approached by anyone. Someone also saw two large dogs inside of Epcot that were not service dogs either.

So....it was only a few days into the new dog friendly thing, and already people were breaking the rules. And I really cannot blame the CM's for not approaching, they have not been properly trained on what to say or do. Not fair. This plan was not well thought out at all.

I wonder if it is a response to Irma and the positive feedback people gave. I think the circumstances are different when the parks are closed and pet owners are with their animals.

I've slowly inched towards I could care less either way. Because when you get down to it, for most people(not discounting allergies or phobia) dogs being there or not is a first world problem

I honestly do not care but I have ruled out the pet friendly resorts. If I start seeing dogs who are clearly not service animals in restaurants, etc, I will have a different opinion. I cannot say what is and is not fair to the dogs, each pet is different. I know my brother's dog was so sad when they were gone away. She was miserable if she was boarded, so that was not an option, and she was miserable if I took her home with me. At home the poor thing refused to eat until they returned. I know she would have been happier being sad in a hotel room than she was being sad without them at all at home.

When I first saw this thread, I thought it said "New Disney Pet Pool!"! I was like wow, they are really going all out for pets at Disney these days, lol! :) I'm putting on my glasses now....
That would be the only pool party I would ever want to go to!:rotfl:

I have no problem with the new policy and feel that Disney should be allowed this period to 'work out the kinks'. It's a new policy and there will be tweaks (or major changes) needed. But I've stayed in plenty of pet friendly hotels and RV parks with 'problem animals' being few and far between. If someone is going into this looking for problems, they'll surely find them. Just as someone who goes into it with an open mind will probably find few problems, if any.

We travel in our RV with our dog and used Best Friends for 'doggy daycare' when we were at the Fort. I would never leave him in a hotel room, but for the same reason we don't leave him in the RV; he's a yapper when left alone.
