NO MORE DIAL UP FOR ME!!!!!! I had to buy a new computer.
The one I'm using right now is just not working the way it should('95 Gateway). Last week,I wasn't able to get online at all. So,I bought a Dell 2400 Dimension with a digital camera, new printer and I'm still shopping for a new scanner. My question is to all of you broadband users, which is less of a hassle: DSL or cable? Also,as long as I'm asking computer questions, any suggestions on a scanner?

thanks,

I have DSLa nd it's great! The cable co here has had too many problems for me to try it.

:D Hi!
No advice as far as modems but I just wanted to say we just got that same computer today! So far, it is very nice.

Congratulations on your new purchase! I moved from my old Gateway (1998) to a new Dell this past April, and I'm so glad I made the switch. My Dell runs so much better than my old Gateway, no more computer meltdowns.

I just switched from dial up to DSL within the last couple of weeks, and I love it. It's light years faster than dial up. I downloaded ZoneAlarms firewall in about 2 minutes with DSL (would've probably taken 3+ hours with dialup). Sprint hasn't been the best company to deal with customer service wise but their DSL service is great.

Anyone noticing a pattern here? We just got a new Dell Dimension 8300 to replace our 5 year old Gateway. Just got it hooked up last night and love it! We still have dial up. Suggestion for a scanner...we got a Dell All-in-one a while back. It's great. I especially like the ink usage 'thingy'. Let's me know when I am running low and so far it is lasting way longer than any other printer we have had. The scanner works super fast and pictures are bright and clear.

after reading all the posts here,I wicked psyched about my new
'puter!! I'm leaning towards DSL because it does seem less
likely to cause headaches(just spoke to a friend here in town who has ComCast and is very unhappy).
I Bought the computer and was offered a package deal of a new printer and Kodak digital camera,so I went for it! Now,I'm looking for a new scanner. My old HP5300C isn't compatible with the new system. I looked at a Visioner 9220 but I'm concerned about the way the adapter is for the 35mm film.
I'm still looking..... any advice???

Hey! I just realized when I get my new stuff,I can scan a picture of my beautiful Dobermans!!!!!

I don't have any experience with DSL , but I do have three DELL's and they are all hooked up to my cable internet, we absolutely love it! DH actually just got a new motherboard for his computer because his got fried , but it was under warranty and DELL never gave us a problem, I got a new modem not too long ago, same here, free of charge , so we will stay with DELL.

I have DSL with TDS.

DSL is a dedicated line. Cable is a shared line. Generally ... Cable is faster than DSL when no one else is on it, but slower than DSL when everyone comes home from work.

We have Comcast cable here, and never a slowdown that I can perceive, same speed any time of the day, day of the week, FAST. I do think both cable and DSL are comparable today, and you will hear great and bad about both from different people in the same area, similar to cell phones. I though this was interesting from Jeff's link. http://webservices.cnet.com/bbw/mostpop.asp I do think you would experience about the same from either.

I now have three Dell's, an almost 3 year old desktop here at home that screams almost like the new laptop and desktop I got for my office just a couple months ago. Once to get to a certain speed, the laws of dimishing returns takes its toll.

Review this for some scanner comparisons and reviews.

Good luck, enjoy.

We have had cable modem (RoadRunner) for almost 3 years and it has only been down 1-2 times(maybe 1 hour) at most. Our price for RoadRunner is $32 a month because DW is a teacher so we get $10 off the $42 price.I would reccomend cable over DSL.

Cable.

We have some older Dells and DH is salivating because his new G5 is on it's way-I'm sure he'll keep it in a secret locked room and I'll use the Dell :( :D

cable/dsl is a function of the local connection.

some places can't get DSL.

cable speeds depends on how many people are on it and the ISP but it is often faster.

if you can get cavalier I hear they adr cheap dor DSL at 25 a month but not report on the quality of service
