We took our first cruise this month. We saw envelopes, postcards and papers stuck behind the fish by some staterooms. My DS said that was probably the mailbox. If this is true, some had small pieces of what looked like drift wood stuck behind them. Is there a meaning/reason behind this?

the envelopes and various other things could be bills, some can be an invitation to a club like the stack, oceaner club or lab. The drift would you saw behind the fish is for the last night aboard the ship, so you can stick it in the door so it will stay open, so you can bring your luggage out and you wont have to keep on opening and closing the door.

On our cruise the stateroom host was using the driftwood to indicate which room he was working on, or to remind him which room(s) he needed to stock with something else. I asked about this: our host said he (and some other hosts) use the wood to remind them to get, say, extra towels for that room before they finish their rounds. Maybe he ran out on the cart and needs to remember to get more before he finishes that area so he puts the wood on the fish as a reminder. Also helps him visually cue in to which room he was working on if he has to go do something else before he finishes. He said it can be hard to remember at times because things get hectic and "all the doors look alike" so the wood helps him pick up where he left off. Pretty crafty, I thought. Me, I'd just wander around aimlessly.

our excursion tickets were in the envelope on the fish when we boarded.

I have also seen the stewards use the wood to prop the doors open in the morning of debarkation so they can keep the doors open while they turn the cabin over for the next guests.

What fish by the stateroom is the OP referring to? I haven't cruised yet, but have seen pics of the dors, and I didn't notice fish on them. Are they on the wall near the door?? I'm trying to visualize.

They are on the wall alongside the door.

Any discussions you attend, they will tell you to watch for "fish mail" for confirmations, etc. DCL version of snail mail or email. Do other cruise lines have something like this?? I never realized how handy it was til I saw someone delivering one day--he had tons of envelopes. He made very short work of them.
