Hi everyone,

Sorry for what is probably a silly question.

We are investigating the purchase of a contract which will have a March use year (direct from Disney).

Our next trip will be July 2025.

Will I lose the 2023 points?

Thank you!

Your 2023 points, even if banked, will expire before your next trip in July 2025.

That trip would be in your March 2025 UY. I don’t know the resort you are considering but hade you asked about the magical beginnings program.

If buying RIV, VGF or VDH, you can sell back those 2023 points to them.

Ok, that is really useful. Thank you.

It is Riviera.

So on purchasing the contract, I should ask if they will buy back our 2023 points. Would this count towards the purchase price?

Sorry, I am confusing myself with this.

My other option, I think, is to delay the purchase. When would I buy to bank points which would be usable in July 2025?

THANK YOU

You would qualify to sell back the 2023 points. They are paying $22/point. You get a rebate check for the amount about a month after you close the contract.

Your March 2024 points can be banked into your 2025 UY as early as March 1st, 2024.

Once banked, they’d be there for yourJuly 2025 trip.

But, if you want to delay and just start with the 2024 points, then you would buy after you get to March 1st.

Personally if I were you, I'd wait until a little bit later to buy the points so you pay less of the current year's dues and wait til at least Jan/Feb to buy the contract so you don't pay any dues for 2023 and if they're still offering Magical Beginnings at that time, sell the 2023 points back at 22 dollars per point. If they're not offering magical beginnings, wait until July of 2024. This will mean you only have to pay half of the full dues of 2024 since they are prorated based on when you start owning them and you'll only own them for half of the year. Once you get the contract, you can then bank the points into 2025 and have the full amount to be able to be used for your July 2025 trip for which the booking window will open in August 2024.

When do you typically travel? In theory a DEC UY would work out "great" as you can sell back the 2022 DEC points (which you would likely get), bank the DEC 2023 UY points into 2024, and that July 2025 trip would be right at the tail end of the "danger zone" for the DEC 2024 points (plus the banked 2023 points).

We have a December UY (as one of our two UY) and it's a bit hard to wrap your head around it but it works great for us. We travel in June / July and the banking window is at the end of July (but not to much to worry as you would really have to cancel a trip 31 days prior anyways). In the future we would love to spend more time around Christmas/December and early in the year so DEC works fine for us as we get closer to retirement.

One word of caution about buying DVC and getting double points your first year. It can make you want to buy more....

Oh crikey, this is tricky! Thank you both.

We always travel late July, early August.

We are just back so our next trip will be July 2025.

If that's the case I'd aim for a June UY. And scratch what I said before, you should be buying your contract in March- May of 2024 so that way you can still get the 2023 points for free and sell those back. After that bank the 2024 points into 2025 to be used for your July 2025 trip.

There is no guarantee though that they will still be offering MB next year.

I would be somewhat surprised when the cabins and especially Poly2 goes on sale, they’d still be offering MB. They might if they still have a bunch of Riveria points to sell, but I wouldn’t count on it

I don’t know if I’d buy a contract now for July 2025 travel. I’m sure incentives will change by then (could be better or worse) but you could put the money into a CD or treasury and earn interest and buy closer to 2025. IDK I just feel it’s a lot of money to invest now (contract price plus dues) for something to first use in two years.

Yep I said that in the previous post in which case if they're not offering it he shouldn't buy until 11 months before his trip in July 2025 since he said he's not going to Disney until then anyways. Unless he wanted to rent out the points of course and try to make a little bit of cash back that way.
