Anyone have recent experience buying new cabinets.

Any advice, when to buy to get the best deal?

I'm thinking about putting some cabinets in the upstairs loft to get all of my sewing/craft stuff together. Right now I have stuff in varying closets, rooms, big tupperware totes etc. Its frustrating when I have to search for things in several rooms. I was thinking of a wall of cabinets, with a flat work space to do things. So, maybe below and above cabinets like a kitchen, so I can have a flat work surface.

What about the instock stuff they have over at lowes. There is one finish I like fo the woodgate cabinets. Is it good quality or will it not last and have me regret it in a year.

The other question. We have carpet upstairs, would we rip back the carpet in that area to get them installed? Can you install this stuff yourself, or do you need a professional to get it right?

Any tips would be appreciated, or other stores, brands to look at.
Thanks

My dad actually took cheap kitchen cabinets and then put a countertop on top in my mom's sewing room. It worked rather well. She had storage below a nice big workspace at the right height to work on.

The cabiets and laminate came from the regular lumberyard/Home improvement store.

last Xmas we bought my MIL all new cabinets for her kitchen. We got the stock Oak cabinets from Lowes. She loves them and they really look great and have held up well. She had a problem with a broken hinge (I think my FIL leaned on the door) but it was a breeze to fix. I wanted to put a cabinet in my laundry so I bought the same ones, as they are very similiar to my kitchen cabinets and I didn't want to spend a $$$.

It requires frequent trips and sometimes being in the right place at the right time, but check out Lowes and Home Depot for discontinued cabinets. They will sell the overstock marked down to get rid of it. Also look for damaged pieces. Sometimes the damage is easy to fix or in a place that might not be seen once they are up, but they usually mark these pieces down very low. You can also try bargaining on the marked down stuff too...depending on how good your negotiation skills are and how badly they want to move the stock can get prices much lower as well. My parents bought some damaged cabinets over the summer (but easily fixable/hidable...a drawer front was coming off, scratches on a side that would be against another cabinet) - they were already half price and my dad convinced them to give him another 20% off if he bought multiple cabinets. I love taking my dad shopping with me for big items...he is great for talking down prices

Another idea is to look at unfinished cabinets if you are handy. They are cheaper since you have to do some of the work yourself and then you can stain/paint them any color you want.

if you can, get IKEA! Amazing deal and you can check out ikeafans online if you don't believe me, LOL:lmao::cool1:
