Do you get your school age kids new backpacks every school year. I tend to, I think it helps them get excited about the new school year starting off with new shiny supplies. disneyshopping.com has some really cheap now with matching attachable lunch totes.

We do!!!

However, already this year I'm about to order DS backpack #3. #1 ripped the first week. #2 was $30 and already ripped at the corner and a wheel fell off. For #3 I'm trying Land's End! Geesh! Oh, and DD is on #2 already - she's in Pre-K and literally carries a soft lunch box and a folder.

He takes home so many heavy books. He's only in 2nd grade!

Yes, our kids get new backpacks for each school year. I buy them at Target the year before for 75% off. We usually pay $3.5- 5.0 for each backpack.

Nope. My dd is the only one in school that needs a back pack & she used it for K & is now in 1st grade with the same one.

She is keeping it until it falls apart & then she can get a new/another LL Bean one.

DS (4) will be in K this September so he will get a LL Bean one too.

We try for every other year. My kids have Lands End backpacks that are not worn out, but they won't fit in the lockers they'll have in school next year, so we'll have to look for some other kind of bag.

If you buy LL bean or Lands end it will last for at least two years! My kids use the same one if it is okay looking!

we did until 6th grade, then my dad bought our daughter one from LL bean and she is still using it and she is in 9th grade. I asked her this year is she wanted a new one since she was going into HS and she said no, she liked the one she had and their was nothing wrong with it.

No. DS uses 2: one for "A" days and one for "B" days. By alternating like that, he's been able to extend their life. The current pair are in their third year. Might even last through next year; they look pretty good.

DD is such a little creature of habit that when she finds one she likes she keeps it till it's worn out. She's in 8th grade and only on the third back pack of her life. (You should see her blanky. :scared: )

my DD is also on backpack #3 this year. She's never been this rough before on them but I think that's what I get for going bargain shopping for them. Either that or they make them a lot weaker than when I was in school. :confused3
I still have 2 of mine from HS that are in pretty good shape for their age.

Next year I think I'll see about Lands End or LL Bean. It's worth the cost if they aren't going to fall apart in a month.

well...
DS has been using his for 3 years... and is completely happy with it- had no problems- from LL Bean.;)

now...
DD is on #3- she is in the 4th grade- had one from Land's Ends in K,1, HAD to have a rolling one from Pettery Barn for 2nd- got to 3rd grade and the books wouldn't fit in the rolling one so bought her the big rolling one from LLBean thinking this should last FOREVER.... and now she has just informed me last week that "it's not cool to have a rolling bookbag in the 5th grade!!" GIRLS!!!

so i guess for her bday this summer she will be getting a regular bb so hopefully between the new one and the last rolling one we won't have to buy her another one!!:lmao:

If you buy LL bean or Lands end it will last for at least two years! My kids use the same one if it is okay looking!

YUP, no need for DD (now 20) to get new ones every year. She had a small size LE one for K which we still use. It's hanging on the back of the bathroom door right now! :rotfl: Then she got a bigger one for 1st grade that lasted until HS. Then a new one for High school that she still uses everyday in college. Can't beat those things! I have a computer backpack from LLB that I got about 10 years ago that still looks pretty new!

My son 14 is on his 4th year using his LL Bean backpack, awesome quality. Plus you can have their initials put on it, because alot of kids have them and that way they won't get mixed up with anyone elses.

We get new ones at the beginning, then start January with a new one. At the beginning of the year they get to choose their new one. When the school supplies go on sale I buy new ones at 75% off for the next semester, and they are thrilled with whatever I pick out - they just love to have a new one in January. The 75% off backpacks also make nice gift bags for birthday parties, etc. Gift wrapping paper is so expensive, and the new backpack is a treat , as well as reusable gift packaging, and at 75% off the backpack is usually less than buying wrapping paper.

I always go thru 3 or 4 each year for DS.
He has so much homework and those books are heavy. The books wear thru the bottom of his backpack. He's currently using an LL Bean backpack and it seems to be holding up well. It's his 2nd backpack for this year.

DD gets a new one every year. She loves to take lots of time choosing just the right one. (Much to my annoyance.) :rotfl:

...since the cheap Wal-Mart/Target backpacks that my DW gets tend to be in tatters by the end of the school year!

Oldest DS is on his 3rd year with an eastpak backpack. They're guaranteed for life!
After DS2's cheapo backpack ripped the 2nd week of school last year, I bought my next 2 eastpaks. They're holding up just as well as the oldest's. I bought them off ebay (new) for about $8 a piece.

I get them lunchboxes every year, instead.

Once they get into the heavy duty book toting, I will upgrade and get a good quality, durable one.

Wow, that's a lot of backpacks!:scared1: I've had the same purple Jansport backpack since 10th grade (I just graduated from college in Dec) and it still looks great. It's been everywhere with me-I even took it with me when I spent a summer traveling/backpacking through Great Britain. It's roomy, so I never have to stuff it to the brink of destruction on a daily basis (although it is packed pretty tight when I use it for travel). I would use it for grad school in the fall, but I think it's time to upgrade to something a little more "grown up" that's meant to hold a laptop. I'll probably still use it for light hiking though.:goodvibes

My oldest DD started middle school this year and I figured she needed a very durable backpack with all the books and school work she would be lugging around. I got her a really nice Swiss Backpack at OfficeMax on sale for about 24.99 and with another 4.99 for insurance. So if anything happens to it within a year that I bought it they will replace with the same one or reimburse me the 24.99. So far it's holding up great but you never know when a zipper might break or the bottom gets ripped up because they rather drag them around lol.
