I am new at the concept of renting points from a DVC member. From what I have read, it sounds like a good idea. What resorts can you use points toward (all or just certain ones)? Would it be worthwhile for a family of 4 vs staying at a value or moderate?

Any info and advice would be of great help.

Welcome to the DIS!

Renting a reservation from a DVC member can be a great way to try a DVC resort and save some $$ too.

You may want to read the Frequently Asked Questions for the DVC Rent/Trade Board for starters.

Members can make reservations at all WDW resorts except Value Resorts, but the most economical use of DVC points will be at DVC resorts.

Just post the dates you want (weekdays use fewer points than weekends), the resort (OKW, BW, VWL, BCV or SSR) and the room-type (Studio, 1BR villa, 2BR villas or Grand Villa) and see if any members can help with a reservation for you. You can also respond to an offer to rent posted by a DVC member.

If you have any questions about which resort or what type of room you'd enjoy, please feel free to ask those right here on the DVC Board.

Good luck!

I rented DVC points for our first trip to Disney and it went great! I was able to save a lot of money and get to experience the Old Key West resort which I wouldn't have been able to otherwise. Trust is a big part of the process, so make sure you are comfortable with the person you are sending your money to. Good luck.

It will not make sense economically to rent points to stay at a value or moderate resort. In fact, it is only a good economic value to rent points if you want to stay at one of the DVC resorts and stay on weeknights (Sunday - Thursday). The WDW DVC resorts are OKW, BWV, VWL, BCV and SSR. The weekend nights (Friday & Saturday) are almost always cheaper to rent for cash directly from Disney.

Best wishes -

If you're staying Sun- Thurs, it's definitely worthwhile, IMO.
After 5-6 trips, staying offsite and on, values and moderates, we took the plunge and rented a couple years ago. We're now owners. To evaluate it better, figure out when you're going to go, look at the point charts and compare the costs. The first time we rented we stayed at BWV Std view studio during Pres week for $110 night. (11points/night at $10) To have that central location, a really great pool, and no "extra Adult" charges was great.
If your stay begins or ends with a weekend, make a reservation at a value or moderate for the whole time. and then decide if you want to rent points for the Sun-Thurs.

I also am new and confused.
I see that the Boardwalk Studio sleeps four but is that all in one room, meaning, there's no privacy between the beds? I am planning my first solo trip either Oct. 2 - Oct. 5th or Dec. 3rd - Dec. 7th. Is it too late to look into those dates? I ask about the privacy between the beds in case someone does decide to go with me.

Here is the site with the pictures of the studio. There is not any privacy with a studio. It is like a basic hotel room with a little extra room.

The one and two bedrooms have separate rooms.

Hope this helps, just click on the studio pictures to get an idea

Thanks, that really helps a lot.
I was just reading some of the reviews about the BW rooms.
Some have been very negative, like mold and broken armoires and TV and no hot water for their entire stay (different reviews). Are these the norm? I would hate to plan on this luxurious stay when I might as well have stayed at the Pop like I did last time.

I don't think the problems you mention are unique to DVC resorts, they likely happen all over, it's just that you hear about them at DVC more because we're on the DVC board. In many DVC stays I have never had a serious problem.

Adding on to what mochabean said: there is a difference in how you look at lodging when you are an 'owner' and a renter. Most owners have enough money invested that they want to keep everything 'up' so as to protect their investment. And then there is also Pride of Ownership considerations.

A renter would most lkely notice if the mattress was old and worn, if the bedding wasn't clean and higher end, but owners notice when hinges are loose and fauctes have a little drip or a slat is loose on the balcony.

I think you would find the BWV MUCH more lux than the value resort you mentioned. Frankly, I LOVE the POLY BUT it was a prebuilt modular...so if you look at those rooms (not the furnishings, just the structural) they are really old and cheap. I haven't been in BWV, but I remember touring OKW when it was first offered for sale, and the construction was very impressive. (I'm a building designer so I look at these things with a critical eye)

From what I've seen charged for rooms at the Poly or better yet for comparison at the BVI.....renting points is often 1/3 the price of cash through Disney direct.

Enjoy your trip, whatever you decide!
