New 9 & 7 year old pin traders--HELP!

This is the first time my boys (9 & 7) have taken interest in pin trading. We've cleaned out most of the Disney Stores around here. Now what do we do? Should we wait and buy the lanyards when we go to the World in March? They each have around 30 pins each. I don't think they will fit on the lanyard?!? They don't want to carry the pin bags. Any suggestions?

Is there any sights that we can go to learn the tricks of the trade? LOL!

We are all beginners at this crazy game!

First let me welcome to this fun world of pin collecting and trading and to the DIS collectors board!

Second, I LOVE your clipart! Snow if my fav princess, we are in a minority!

A good place to start is Pinpics.com.

Do the boys want to collect some to keep? They may enjoy having a cork board on their wall to display 'their' pins.



As for trading in the parks, either a lanyard or a pin book is a good idea. If they will mostly be trading with Cast Members, they don't need to take ALL 30 each time out. My son and I would load up a lanyard with about 10 pins each and those would keep us busy for most of the day.

I am sure others will be offering plenty of advice too!

Do watch these boards as we have pin meets around the Chicago area and we'd love to see your kids sometime. Last one was a couple of weeks ago in Elmhurst. There is also a monthly meet in Schaumburg.

My kids (5 and 7) just got into pin trading BIG TIME on our last trip! I had purchased a few of the millenium pins, and I decided to give them to them to trade. I think they had about 10 each to trade, and I gave them the assignment to fill their lanyards w/pins that they liked by the time we had to go home which they did! The kids did not like wearing the lanyards at all, so we left them back in the room. Each night upon our return to the room we would look at the lanyards, and the kids would pick 4 that they wanted to trade the next day. I would put them in their hip pack in a plastic baggie folded up making sure that none of the pins were touching, so they did not get scratched. It became an evening ritual The kids really had a blast trading. The CM's were wonderful with them!
We just raided the DS to buy a bunch of traders for our trip this year; because the kids were looking at their lanyards saying, "I don't want to trade any of these." They can't wait!

Welcome to the wonderful world of pin trading. It's an adventure in itself. My kids really enjoy trading pins also. I think I would only emphasize 3 points

1. make sure they know when they trade a pin they won't be getting it back.

2. They do not have to trade anything. Don't let them feel pressured. CM's WILL NOT do this but other pin traders may. I've experienced it with both my kids.

3. it's all about fun so as a parent you may want to let them pick it and keep some opinions to yourself. I stress some, your still a mom and have to keep their best interest at heart. My youngest wanted to trade a pin with a CM of course and we were thinking NO but she did and turned out to be a real good trade.

As for carrying them into the parks, they did make little pin bags about the size of a small photo album. You could buy these at most pin carts I believe but I dont remember the cost. Some people have come up with inventive ways of showing off their pins. Be creative. I know my kids don't like wearing the lanyards.

Thank you all for your information! After reading the posts, the boys have decided to wear their "trading pins" on their hats.

Is there a sight where we can find out the "good" pins that we want to keep or trade for?

You can go to Pinpics.com ,which is an amazing site of Disney Pins!
You can find out if a pin is Limited Edition or open stock, and it also lists the members wanting and trading the pin. That can give you a rough idea of demand.

But all in all, what makes a pin GOOD is if you like it!
I would recommend not trading a Limited Edition (LE) to a CM lanyard. Just my personal opinion.

I think you are well on your way to a wonderful time!

I second Pinpics.com I also say when in doubt ask. So if you don't find your pin there or just a little information on it just ask the board usually someone has an idea. I had asked about some chip and dale pins I bought. Got a fair answer too.

if your boys really like pins then you MUST take them to DTD on your trip so they can make their own pins. The bases and pieces are some what limited but you'll manage to find something you like. My girls got a great big kick out of it.

www.pinpics.com is definitely where you want to research pins and get a feel for what's what in Disney pins.

You can also have the boys decide how they might want to display their "keepers" once they return home. Ideas can range from storing them in binders or pin bags (there are inexpensive ways to create your own binders) or to decorate corkboard that they can then be displayed on, etc.

Wearing their tradable pins on hats is a great idea - it's what my DH does because he hates wearing a lanyard. My 12yo DD carries a small planner (all guts removed & replaced by felt & foam pages full of pins). And I wear a lanyard.

I don't know how many days you will be spending in WDW, but I would suggest "budgeting" their traders over the duration of your park visits. For example, if you plan 3 days in the parks, divide the # of traders they have over 3 days (i.e. 10 per day). At the end of each day they decide what is a "keeper" and remove it from their hat, and replace it with a new "trader." That way they don't burn through 30 traders in a day, and then have nothing they want to trade away for the rest of the trip.

I have children those ages and they trade (well, rather collect LOL!) My oldest collects Jasmine pins and my younger Belle pins (and mommy collects Cinderella pins and TOD/N pins) Anyway, what we do is do like you did and get pins from TDS when they are dirt cheap. Then they use those to trade in the parks. since you have so many, I would put a dozen on the lanyard each day for them to start with. ONly put pins that they are wanting to trade, not ones they want to collect. If they "run out" you could always carry their extra pins in a back pack or they could carry them in their fanny packs.

Even though my girls have set characters they collect they do periodically run into a pin that they just fall in love with. We've gotten some pretty unique pins through trading with CM's.
