Is it a new 1040 booklet we're waiting for? We have not received our Federal booklet yet and wondering if we can pick one up at the post office? My DH did a rough draft of our taxes based on last year's booklet. We usually mail our itemized taxes in and get Direct Deposit. Do we need to wait until a few days before Feb. 14th to mail them?

TIA!!:goodvibes

If you don't mind my asking why don't you file electronically (or atleast use a Turbo Tax type software) instead of by mail? It is much simpler.

I don't know. Our taxes are pretty simple. We itemize because of the mortgage interest. I thought you had to pay to e-file. :confused3

Thanks so much for the link...I had heard they were stopping the mailings, but I guess I thought it started next year.

Thank you!:thumbsup2

I believe that a lot of the booklets and forms will be available online for printing as well.

Check here for a list of forms.

I used to get them this way before I started E-filing. I go through H&R Block's free filing and it's super great! Doesn't cost a penny to efile your federal return.

What is the website for H&R Block?

Thanks! I'll have DH check out the different websites and see which he likes.

Question regarding using the H&R block: can you print out your tax return at the end for your records?

Yes, you can do that for all software. I just efiled using TaxAct...I'm hoping we're at the top of the pile on 2/14 when they finally start processing itemized returns! ;)

OK, so you can go ahead and efile now and they will just submit it on Feb 14th?

Yep! You can also save it as a PDF File, which is what I do. I print a copy for my Tax Binder, then also save the PDF file in my Tax Folder on my computer.

It will print (and PDF) all the forms that you used, not just the 1040. It's really handy!

Why do we have to wait to the 14th to file, I have seen this mentioned a few times on the boards but I don't have an understanding of it. Is this because the IRS isn't ready and we have to wait. If I file through H&R Block before the 14th are their forms accurate? Thanks for helping me understand.

From what I understand, because of the extremely late changes to the tax code in 2010, all the software calculations need to be changed. It will take that long to update everything. I don't know if that's the individual software (hrblock, turbotax, taxact, etc) or software on the IRS site.

But I believe this only applies to certain people. I think if you're doing a 1040EZ form, you can go ahead and file.
