nevermind!

You should contact the company that ran the inquiry and ask them about their authorization and what it was for. It could be completely innocent, and an actual inquiry, but it could also be an indicator that someone is checking your credit for something else.

As far as the credit reporting company goes, they got a real inquiry, whether it was fraudulent or not is up to you to find out and report. If you find that it was a fraudulent report, you can put a "lock" on your credit report with all agencies to prevent it.

It could also have been something as simple as a mixed up SS#.

Thanks. I can't find a phone number for the company, just the address. I called Equifax but there dispute dept isn't open today, so I'm going to try again tomorrow.

Did you rent an apartment or cosign an apartment lease for a friend or relative? Did you maybe tour a new apartment community in your hometown? I bet if you think back you may be surprised at what this is related to.

Here is the website with more information and a telephone number.

oh my goodness I feel so silly... I was just about to type to you that I have never co-signed anything for anyone, especially for property... then it dawned on me, when I went to college orientation with my brother last June at his new school, even though he was old enough and had sufficient credit, he needed a 'guarantor' of his lease and I signed for him.

I guess I don't need to talk to the dispute department anymore, thank you so much for jogging my memory!
