What extras do I need to buy when i am renting a car from lax

The car rental company is likely to try to sell the following extras to you:

- Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)
- Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)
- Upgraded roadside assistance
- Supplemental Liability Insurance
- "Full tank of gas tank" pre-pay option
- GPS

For most renters, it's best to decline all of these

For the first four, check with your insurance company and credit card company; most likely, you already have sufficient coverage (but don't take my word for it).

The "Full tank of gas tank" option might sound good at first. But it only works out if you are able to return the car with the gasoline indicator on Empty. You're much better off only replacing the gas you actually use right before you return the car.

GPS can be a very useful in an unfamiliar city, but instead of spending around $10 a day for a rental GPS, just bring one from home. For the price of renting a GPS for a week, you can buy one. Or, for more money, you can buy a good one with lifetime map updates and whatever features you want.

If you determine that you can decline everything, don't let the rental car agent intimidate you into buying something you don't want. Also, make sure you have your insurance card in your wallet (not just in the glove compartment of your car back home).
