I have been going to DisneyWorld since 1983 averaging once a year - Never stopped by the camping area. How does it stack up against the outside world?

It's one of the best campgrounds in the country!! It is also a wonderful place to just spend an afternoon and evening away from the parks!! There are all kinds of activities during the day, there is a nightly campfire and movie under the stars with a sing a long with Chip n Dale, there is the Hoop De Doo Review, Mickey's Back Yard Barbecue, Horseback Riding, Tri Circle D Ranch, and miles of sidewalks and trails running through the campground for a beautiful stroll, bike ride, or you can rent a golf cart and go "looping" to check out everyone's rigs and decorations. You can watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electrical Water Pageant from the beach, you can go fishing in the various canals, and you can rent water mice, and other watercraft from the marina, and you can rent bicycles, paddle boats, and canoes at the bike barn.

The question might be better phrased... how do other campgrounds stack up against Fort Wilderness. Fort Wilderness pretty much sets the standard. (very high too). The only downside is the cost for a campsite. Better than a hotel anytime though.

When you rent a room at a resort..disney resort or ANY resort....youve got a ROOM.....I dont care what color the carpet is, how nice the comforter on the bed is, what kind of wallpaper they have on the wall or how big the TV is....its JUST A ROOM that you are always looking for a reason to leave. "The kids are bored, lets go to the pool." or "We're going to the gift shop for a bit just to look around and get out of the room for a while."....Ive never done this at the campground. I dont feel like Im STUCK in anything...I have the great outdoors right there...granted, I dont stay on my site the entire time because there is SO MUCH to do at the Fort with the great fishing, and bike riding, and golf carting, and sitting at the beach, etc, etc, etc......but theres nothing that can compare to vacationing in the great outdoors versus being stuck in a room.

If you took Fort Wilderness and plopped it down anywhere is the country within 20 miles of a major interstate it would do very well as a resort destination all by itself. The fact that it is next door to the most popular vacation destination in the world, well, I'd say it's unbeatable! Sure, there are some RV resorts that are more upscale: FW doesn't have it's own golf course, or a clubhouse, no sauna or health spa... those would all be out-of-character for the Fort. And that's really what makes the Fort great, its rustic character without being too rustic. And, all those upscale attractions are just a bus or boat ride away.

lets see, spend all day together in the park, then go to a hotel room and spend the rest of the evening with pre-teen girls and a teen boy

but with Camping, our girls have a bunk house with TV, Max has living room with TV, Mom has bedroom with TV and Dad has XM radio, cooler of beer and a Cub game under the awning in the evenings....no comparison. Everybody has there own space to recharge.

And I agree with Shan-man, I would go just for the campground alone.

4 star campground and watch the fireworks at night...we always book an extra 3 days for doing nothing but hanging at FW, boardgames, golf carting, monorail riding, mini golf,,,, possibilities are endless.

Countdown to June '09, can't wait

We've had many camping neighbors over the years that came for the weekend or a bit longer and never even bothered going to the parks. And they had kids with them who were having a dandy time.

We spent 3 weeks in early December at FW and after all that time DH complained that we didn't have enough non-park days to just hang out at FW.

That about says it all for me! :)

I''m surprised since you mentioned that you've been visiting since '83 that you've never gone to the Hoop Dee Doo Revue(dinner show)..or Mickey's Back Yark BBQ...both are located in Fort Wilderness. Next time you're at the resorts, come on over and rent some bikes..check the campground out for yourself..or book one of the cabins and stay on site in the Fort.

Its ok nothing special just a campsite:lmao: Or it maybe the best place you could ever stay on vacation :thumbsup2 Try it you just might like it.:)

Fort is a 10 . We compare all other campgrounds to it. The closest we have seen is a 8. It is a gem.

There is an outside world? LOL

I have to say that in my opinion for what it is worth (an with our economy right now that is not much!), it is the nicest campground we have ever been to. The comfort stations are top notch. The sites are always clean and well maintained. The location is outstanding even if you don't go to the parks. And now with the new pool....well let's just say it will continue to top our list. I am always in search of something that can top it but I haven't found anything yet for us.

I agree the down fall was the pool. Won't be a problem much longer.

I adore The Fort and have talked it up nonstop to my family (who will all be joining us down there in Dec!). Yes, there are times when Disney charges far too much for a campsite and during those times (or during times when we will be hitting the parks pretty heavy) we just stay at a campground nearby.

Honestly, I would not recommend it if you're mainly going to "do the parks". We were left feeling kinda torn between wanting to go to the parks but really wanting to stay at The Fort!

It is THE perfect resort (in my opinion) if you have extended family or friends going with you, a family with varying interests, and/or teens.

I'm also going to say - the best and cleanest restrooms I'm ever seen in any campground!:thumbsup2
