I was just started on neurontin last night. I feel like I have a hang over. I also feel unusually hungry. Is this normal. I have been trying to lose weight, but injured my foot and have nerve damage. It helped a little bit with the pain, but not much. I DO NOT want to gain weight on this med. I have managed to lose 10 lbs. in the last month and half. Thoughts on this??

I was on Neurontin for a couple of years to treat migraines. I didn't have any of those symptoms although at first I did have some feelings of confusion. Is that how you feel? I didn't gain any weight on it at all.

I just feel really weird. A little disoriented and foggy. Hungry, did I mention hungry?

I am taking it for nerve pain, but also had a lidoderm patch on. The patch seems to help, pain at a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. ( 10 being the worst pain). I sprained my foot with some nerve damage 3 weeks ago.

I think I will call my doctor on Monday and explain my symptoms. I am also taking adderall XR for my ADD and Klonopin at night PRN for my NES.

I just wish there was something, non pharamceutical I can do for the pain. I hate taking all these meds.

How many mgs are you taking? Yes, I would say I was a little disoriented, but it did pass. I don't remember being overly hungry though.

I take Klonopin at night (.5 mg) for RLS. You haven't increased that recently have you?

I just take 0.25 mg of Klonopin, the full dose 0.50 makes me really groggy the next morning. Doc said it was ok to split dose if needed. I did read that Klonopin was used for nerve pain at times. I think I might just take that instead of the neurontin, I'll call my doc first though.

My neurologist kept increasing my neurontin, and it never did help my migraines. I'm on Topamax now, and I've only had 2 or 3 migraines since July. Sure beats 4 or 5 a week. :thumbsup2

Good luck! I hope the side effects either pass or you find another med that works for you.

I used to take it but it was to prevent seizures after having brain surgery to take care of a ruptured aneurysm. I never knew it was prescribed for pain - although I could see why it would help nerve pain if it can take care of other neurological issues.

I've been off of it for a few years, but I can't say that I remember being hungry or feeling hung over. It could be because it wasn't the first anti-seizure med I was on after the surgery so my system didn't react to it the same way a new user would. The first few years i had taken Dilantin, but that one is stronger and is known to cause gums to recede after using it for a while so I had to switch.

I would guess that it would pass after a while. It could just be your system getting used to it. Good luck and hope you feel better!

I have taken neurontin for three or four years; the highest dose allowed. I take it for neuropathy and fibromyalgia. I have never had any side effects from it at all. Never gained wieght (and I gain weight easily) and never felt confusion other than what I get from the fibromyalgia. I love neurontin. It has worked very well for my pain. Since being on the neurontin, I am using less than half of the vicodin that I used before going on it. To the best of my knowledge, weight gain is not associated with neurontin but some people do feel that hung over feeling that you describe. I never did but it is a common side effect. It seems go go away after a while for about half the people who take it.

DW MeanLaureen has taken Neurontin for pain for about 2 yrs now. Shes at the maximum safe dose. She did have a bit of trouble adjusting to it and adjusting to increases. She would feel like she was complety in a fog for about a week. Kind of like everything going on around her was part of a movie she was watching instead of actually living it.

We aren't completly sure if this was part of the Neurontin but it happened right when she first started taking it, she had nasty night tremors. She would wake up hallucinating about some horrifying things happening to her and would be screaming bloody murder. It scared the heck out of me. Went on for about 7-10 days until it stopped.

I take it (in combo with Depakote) for migraine prevention, and the only side effect I've noticed is that I can't come up with words.
