Neuro Psych, Does anyone have any experience?

Karissa goes in tomorrow for her first appointment with the newest Dr in our arsenal

The first appt is an hour long interview with dh and I and then 3 hours of observation and testing of Karissa

Then we go back next week for another 4 hours of observation and testing.

This should give us all a pretty good idea of where we stand and what needs to be done. I cant believe it is that intense but I am glad that we are doing it. I think it will give us an idea of where to go now.


has anyone else dealt with this type of Dr?

My DS12 has asperger's syndrome. Been there. It really isn't bad. He asked some questions and had him play some games. The different things that they do show how the different parts of the brain are functioning. At the end of all the testing the doctor and I sat down and discussed it all. He told me each test and the results and his recommendations. We didn't do the testing all at once though. We went for an hour or two every week for 4 or 5 weeks. Sometimes twice in one week. But DS is very ADHD and we had to catch him on good days when the meds seemed to be working.

Both my son and daughter had neuro-psych evaluations through Children's Hospital to be tested for ADHD. It took close to 8 hours for each of them and then we went back 2 weeks later to get the report from "the team." Mostly the kids found it to be fun. I about climbed the walls sitting in the waiting room all that time.

My DD now 22 did that years ago. She actually loved him and had a good time. There were some games played and lots of talking. we did all 8 hours ine day because they were testing for ADD. We really got good comprehensive testing for the ADD. School gives you 40 minutes and comes to a conclusion. She ended up with several learning disabilities as well as the ADD. Bring a book for yourself or something to keep you busy. Good luck, it was the best thing we ever did for my daughter and she's doing great now!

Our DD was very anxious about meeting with her Dr. They were excellent at putting her at ease. She started out crying and was having fun in no time. I do not know what you are testing but DD's took about 5.5 hours total. We were given a thorough evaluation including recommendations and possible treatments. It was the best 5.5 hours we spent as it finally gave us answers we were looking for.

Got evaluated a little while back for a brain tumor. Only briefly came in to contact with the neurologists back then but I remember them being very reassuring.

More recently I've received repetitive treatments are the hands of neurologists (no, I'm not going to say what exactly) and I have to say, even though the doctors were very professional, I found the experience desperately distressing and terrifying.

Make sure to keep your DD reassured and stay with her! You have no idea how reassuring something as little as a hand being held can be.

We were not permitted to stay while DD was being evaluated. We were there for the initial meeting and left after about 30 minutes. DD has anxiety and she was fine by the time we left.

Thanks, she is doing ok because she knows it wont be like the other Dr visits. I told her it would be like the her favourite Dr her Neurologist. She loves him! This doc is in the same office so that should help matters.

The Dr also happens to be a friend of one of my friends so she is comforted by that. I told her she can ask for the "dirt" on Ms Nat. LOL


I will pack a "Busy bag" for her as well so she has something to do while we are being interviewed and a big book for me!
