Network television is really becoming a cesspool.

Yesterday on General Hospital, one of the characters said, "Shut up! You want to act like a man but you're acting like a little (female dog)!!" I have to say I'm quite shocked that female dog would be used in that context without shame on network TV. Is anyone else shocked? Because I am.

Not to mention that the "female dog" comment is typically reserved for women. So it was a kind of a misogynistic statement.

I'm not surprised. I don't usually watch much TV; however, lately I have been trying to watch some shows here and there. I have been surprised at the language I've heard used (female dog reference seems acceptable). I think the soaps have always been a little loose with language even though they are on in the middle of the day. Then, after 4:00, TV seems to "clean up" again until about 8:00 or 9:00 p.m.

Wow, really? I guess I had never heard it used on TV (non-cable).

I swear I've heard them use it on "The Office." I also think I've heard some choice words used on House and NCIS. Not sure if those are exactly the shows, but I've done a double-take a few times.

In fact, there is one episode in Season 5 of the office where Michael Scott comes driving in to work (it's the show opener) after being fired, he has Lady Gaga blaring on the radio, and he looks at the camera and says "It's Britney rhymes-with-witch." But I think they've said it before.

I stopped watching network TV years ago because of the crass humor and dull storylines.

Yes it is acceptable for primetime hours these days,

I wonder in what context it is used normally on TV. Said toward a man or a woman..it has a different meaning. If it is said toward a woman, it means she's domineering and aggressive. Said toward a man it means that he's feeble and weak. Interesting.

You got it :thumbsup2

House does having something at the beginning that says "viewer discretion advised." But then it's on at 7 pm. What happened to those type of shows being on at 9 pm?

I've been amazed at Heroes this season. I like the show, but it's gotten so violent...I mean, "crucifying" Sylar with a nail gun? Even if they didn't show the actual nails in the hands, I think that's way too intense for a show that's on at 7 pm.

I have no problems with the words that have been mentioned. I think the least amount of censorship done by the networks the better. I would prefer no censorship and let each viewer decide themselves but that will never happen as long as the FCC is involved. If a viewer wants to censor what they or those in their house watch they can do so but that doesn't mean the networks shouldn't put it on.

If enough people don't watch the shows they will be taken off the air and if the reason is the language they will change it. As long as the ratings are high enough that means the viewers enjoy the show, language and all.

The language doesn't actually bother me either; however, when you're "old" like me;) and you see how much TV has changed from even the 70s when you couldn't say anything remotely cussworthy, it sort of takes you aback. Heck, George Carlin had a whole comedy routine on the 7 words you couldn't say on TV. I wonder what the number is down to now.

Wasn't that word used in the famous female fight scene on Dynasty many years ago?

Oh FireDancer has some libertarian in him. :thumbsup2

ETA: I hope that's not considered a political statement. lol

I am not a huge fan of the cussing either, or even a majority of the subject matter 1/2 the time. This is why I just LOVE my TIVO, I can watch whatever I want once the kids are asleep and even skip over entire scenes if I choose to do so. Don't get me wrong, sometimes this stuff is really funny, I happen to watch Chelsea Lately each night and her show is far from clean. What IS'T funny however, is being forced to discuss this with garbage with my 11 or 10 year old kids because some TV personality/writer/performer out there thinks their freedom of speech is more important than my freedom to ignore them. Why is it some people are so desperate to disrupt other people? IT never furthers their point, it only bothers or worse, alienates other people and I am always left wondering if they ever really thought through the outcome????? I mean do these words ever really enhance the sentence?

I happen to think Sponge Bob's Sentence Enhancer episode points out how ridiculous the whole practice really is. If you are interested you can find it by searching for : Spongebob Squarepants - Sailor Mouth (Fast Forwarded) on you tube. This version is fast forwarded to fit in 5 minutes and is clean, as in the different sounds are genuinely part of the episode. I couldn't find the real time one and stopped looking because MANY people seem to find it amusing to edit in some truly awful words and I got so disgusted I had to stop looking

Yet on the other hand, a TV show like All in the Family couldn't possibly on TV now due to political correctness.

I think we are all a little screwy now.

*Agrees*

It comes down to personal responsibility. If you don't like what is happening on a show or what is said, then don't watch it. Simple, clean, easy...

I was watching the TNT the other night. I couldnt wait to watch Ray Ramano's new show, "Men of a certain age" I counted 12 times the sh@% was uttered. I was shocked. Since when is that word allowed on network TV?

I have to say I was really shocked when the soaps started using cuss words - as well as much, much more provacative scenes - since they're on during the day.. Years ago - when my kids were 4 or so - they could be sitting right next to me playing with a toy while I was watching and there was nothing to be concerned about..

Fast forward and now you have cussing on all hours of the day and night - doesn't matter what kind of show it is - suggestive scenes that never would have passed muster a number of years ago - and you really have to monitor the shows that little ones might see(or even overhear)..

What I really find interesting is that it really does nothing to increase the "value" of the show - to make it more interesting - or to make the story line any clearer.. It's almost like they're doing it "just because they can"..

I have found the same to be true for many fiction books.. What "I" consider "garbage" is nothing more than "filler".. Take it all out and you still have a very interesting story..

However - I assume all of these things are aimed at keeping viewers happy (and in the case of books, keeping sales up) - so I guess there are people out there who enjoy it.. I just don't happen to be one of them..
:santa:
