Does anyone have Netflix here? I've heard the Canadian version isn't great compared to the American one. For those of you who have it, do you love it? Is it just okay but still worth it for $8 a month, or would you not recommend it at all?

Thanks guys :)

I'd like to hear also. I looked at what was available on their website, and it seemed like slim pickings. Lots of older movies I've already seen or don't care to see.

It works really well streaming through wii and you can have many computers going at once watching different things. For us it is worth $8 a month since that is less than the cost of renting 2 movies. There is enough tv shows on there to make it worth it........one series my husband always wanted to watch- I've been watching some Family Jewels I missed........the movies are older but for us we don't rent or go to every movie out there so there are a lot we wanted to see. We think it is great for the price. There is a month's free trial- have to give credit card. It won't work in the states- I was hoping it would work when on vacations but you can't sign in- I have not contacted them to see if we could watch American version when in the states. I love how you can start watching a movie and stop but when you go back it asks if you want to start where you left off.

I just started a free trial a couple of days ago. I've come across many movies that state "unavailable" - even some older ones (James Bond, He Said She Said). I'm not sure why that is. I'd say there are enough movies on there to make it worth it for a few months though. I browsed through some of the lists and have a long list of movies I'd like to watch. It will be great for my family during the summer I think, anytime we go to a campground that has wireless internet, we'll be able to watch movies via the Wii instead of having to bring along the dvd player and movies the kids have watched many times before.

There's lots of stuff that's unavailable, but tons more that is. If you're thinking you're going to watch all the new releases as they come out, think again. But the odd one does pop up. I watched Iron Man 2 the other day. For $8 a month, I'm not sure how anyone can possibly say it isn't worth it. If you watch 2 movies a month, it's worth it.

I had the 1 month free trial that I signed up for with swagbucks. I got my swagbucks and cancelled. It wasn't worth it for us. Every time I looked for a movie, it was unavailable. We couldn't find anything that we really wanted to watch.
We just borrow new releases from the local library for free and they really are the new releases, not year old movies that Netflix has as their "New Releases"

I find the key to Netflix is not to look for specific things to watch, but to browse until you see something you like. They definitely don't have a whole ton of new releases available. This is actually not even the fault of Netflix, but of our own government apparently. Something about having to have a certain percentage of the content being Canadian, which is why so much of what you search for is unavailable in Canada. Most of the movies that everyone wants to watch are from the USA.

I love it. We've had for 6 months now. It streams to my TV through my Wii. It's great for kids series such as Arthur, Word World, Curious George ect. We also enjoy the wide selection of documentaries and series. They started with a really limited selection but they seem to be adding new titles every couple weeks.

Just wanted to know how you all are dealing with bandwith issues? Not many, if any service providers give unlimited bandwith any longer, and I know that constant usage of Netflix will make for serious bandwith usage.

The big dealings between the CRTC and Bell, will directly impact Netflix, as it could put them out of business. So, Netflix is only $8.00/month, but your Internet usage could be very high. Not worth it for old movies and kids' reruns.

Thanks, Tiger

Cancon does not apply to web based services.

I suspect the low amount of content is due to Netflix having to pay separate licences for all content made available in Canada (not a gov't restriction, but studio licenses).

This is why we haven't jumped on Netflix yet. We'd end up having to pay $100 a month for enough bandwidth!

I've subscribed to Netflix Canada since Day 1, but I finally cancelled it last week and switched my subscription to Netflix US. It's got significantly more (both old and new) content (including Toy Story 3 and Up), and with the exchange rate actually costs less :thumbsup2

I use a service called Unblock-US which allows me to use the American Netflix, and other American video sites like Hulu.

as for Bandwidth, been with TekSavvy (first DSL, now Cable) for a while and enjoying my 300gb cap, and as for UBB (which Bell has actually dropped, and instead proposed a similar scheme they're calling AVP), my actual monthly usage is probably somewhere around 100gb, so it won't hurt me too much. Even if TekSavvy was the same price with the same caps as the big guys, i'd never switch back.

I've heard about that unblocking service thing, does it cost a lot? Is it legal?

Thanks!

Now that's extremely interesting to read! I'll have to look into that!

So I set up UnblockUS last night and it works perfectly so far! I signed up for the 30 day trial of Netflix.com and there is a large amount of movies there that I can't get at Netflix.ca. Thanks again for the tip! :thumbsup2

Wondering..can you only watch the Netflix U.S on your computer though??:confused3

If you change the setting on your computer, it'll only work on that particular computer.

If you change the setting on your router, it'll work on any device connected to your network, be it a computer or a game console. I have US Netflix working on my Wii.
