netflix and cinderella man (update in original post)

Funny how timely this resurrection is - I just got March of the Penguins on Friday (I'm returning it today for anyone in the Worcester distribution area waiting for it). It's been #1 on my list since the day it was released.

Cinderella Man is still showing a long wait for me.

see, I got march of the penguins right away. we watched it over the weekend...so cute! also got the new zorro movie the day it was released...very cute. a fun action movie

I read the article about Netflix penalizing those who watch and return quickly on Saturday in our local paper. I fired Netflix on Monday and signed for Blockbuster. They are sending me the "very long waits" from my Netflix queue and I got the 2 free in-store movie rentals for this month. I made sure i was at the store by 10:05 and I got Zathura. I know that because my kids want to see that so badly, Netflix would have put that in the same bucket with Cinderella Man and it would be months before I'd get it.

So long to the company who doesn't appreciate my loyalty. Hello, Blockbuster!

Does anyone honestly think that Blockbuster is going to be able to do anything different? Mailing a DVD has a fixed cost. First there is postage, lets assume they get 50% first class rate, thats 39 cents right there. Add in a mailer, the man power to sort it/ pack it and it approaches something around a dollar (estimated). So if you take out 18 DVDs a month, netflix makes 0 off of you. Blockbuster might be willing to run a loss to kill netflix for now, but once netflix dies, or blockbuster runs the mail-order business for a while they will need to turn a profit as well, hello throttling.

While throttling stinks, you are still getting DVDs at cost. And there are easy ways to make sure you get new releases when they come out, or just wait a few months and they show up for 20% of what it costs to rent from a brick and mortar store.

If you our anyone else has a link to the story, I'd love to read it.

Here you go! http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,184523,00.html :)

We just started NetFlix 3 weeks ago. WE are watching the Gilmore Girls from the beginning too! I am only on Disc 2 of Season 1. But that is OK. Don't want to get caught up TOO fast. :) I am really enjoying it. And you are right, it IS kind of like Northern Exposure. I always like that show too! :)

Switch to Blockbuster.

In the past two months, I have gotten

Cinderella Man
Must Love Dogs
Legend of zorro (got it the same day it was released)
New CSI season the same week it was released
Perfect Man when it was released
Flightplan (got that the same day it was released)
Kronks New Groove
40 year old virgin (got it the day it was released)
Wedding Crashers (same week it was released)
March of the Penguins after a few weeks it was released

I'm sure I have forgotten some as well.

Its called throttling. I was throttled something fierce from Netflix and switched to Blockbuster. If you do a yahoo search or such on the terms of Netflix throttling you will see it.

I've been a loyal Blockbuster fan for a long time. I love the free rental coupons either used for movies or video games.

update:

well, finally, after a LONG time, cinderella man is on its way to my house! woo-hooo!!! I have not given up on netflix, because honestly, this is the only movie I have had a problem getting. If it becomes habitual or I see longer times or other throttling, well, then I'll re-think things.

just thought I'd update
