For Christmas I thought about getting my 14 yo a netbook. But the only problem is most of them are only 1GB. But maybe a reg laptop would be a better option?
If you have one can you please tell me about it?

No netbook is 1 Gb. It the RAm that is 1 GB on every notebook. The hard disk is all a good capacity. A netbook is the solution if the main pupose is browsing th enet. For real homework and stuff a laptop is preferable.

Thanks, that is where I was confused.
The guy at Best Buy was not making any sense and was trying to get me to buy something I didn't want.

I love my netbook. I use it mainly for websurfing, but I have also loaded (and have no problem using) open office...including spreadsheets, presentations and word type functions. It has 1 GB of RAM, so some of the more data intensive things (like some games on Facebook, etc) run a bit slow. But, for just looking at facebook, surfing for info, etc., it works just fine. In fact, I'm using it now. I think it's a nice compromise between a "smart phone" and a laptop. Super lightweight, and portable.

As a primary computer, I don't think it would be great. As a take along computer, it's wonderful.

Glad that you like yours. I got one for DH in July when Target was having their sale and am planning on keeping it from him until Christmas. I am a little nervous since then I don't know if I will be able to take it back if he doesn't like it. He only wants a 'laptop' to use MS Office (we have a Mac and he doesn't love the MS office for Macs) and to surf around online a little bit. No games or photo storage on it.

I hope he likes it!!!

Using mine right now as well. I do have desktop and both dh and dd have their own laptops. I love being able to just drop my netbook into my tote bag and off I go. It's terrific for checking stuff out online, emails, etc. No, I wouldn't get it if it was for school or other heavy duty stuff. But, for just browsing the internet, it's terrific.

We don't have a netbook but I was talking to a friend that has one and he said it is great to take places, surf the net, etc. but they keyboard is really small and would be cumbersome to type long papers, etc. so it wouldn't make a good "primary" computer or a good homework computer.

Acer makes one w/4gb of memory now. Some netbooks can be upgraded to 2gb as well...

They are great for surfing/traveling, would not want to use one for hours a day.

DH and I each have the 10" Asus netbooks with 4GB of RAM and they are great. I have loaded Open Office, iTunes and Kindle pc and they run very nicely. One of the sales guys at my office just got an Asus netbook/laptop hybrid. It has a 13" screen and weighs a bit more but is still a very nice light machine.

Asus is known for making excellent mother boards and the 13" model has a one year accidental damage warranty that covers any damage in the first year, even if it gets dropped.

In the end, it really depends on what your budget is. Our smaller netbooks were about $400 with the added memory and a 3 yr damage protection warranty. The 13" was about $800 and came with 4GB of RAM.

I LOVE my Asus pink netbook, 1005pe. :lovestruc

I put the free Microsoft Security Essentials on it, and it is lightning fast. Mine has Windows 7 starter and I love it! As fast as our laptop it seems. Mine is just so I can surf when others in the family are on the desktop or laptops. Perfect! Google Chrome is great on it too.

For a college student or a student using it for school, I would go with a laptop as you may need a CD drive.

Depends on how rough your 14yo will be on it. our 17yo just ruined his, the hinges broke. The computer guy told me it wasnt worth fixing, that netbooks are essentiallly made to be disposable, not fixed. So, if you are gonna get one, be sure to get the extended warranty.

I just got a Dell 10" Inspiron Mini. The primary reason I got it is to take it on campus with me. There was no way I was goin gto be able to take my regular laptop on campus with me (its a 15.6"...too big) so I bought this one to use in class. It's my 3rd laptop. I have one for games, watch movies, itunes, etc. I have another regular laptop that is only going to be used for school and I have the mini to use on campus.

Mine is 1GB and 250G hard drive.

So far so good.
we'll see how it holds up throughout the school year.
