Netbook or Ipod Touch for 11 and 15 year old

My dd is asking for a touch, but her friend is getting a netbook and trying to talk dd into one. I thought she might change her mind but she definitely doesn't want the netbook.

My DD11 wants an iPod touch also, but I just don't get it? Can it be used as a phone also? Don't you have to pay for all those downloads, apps, games, movies, etc?? Sounds to me like "the gift that keeps TAKING". LOL!

I would love someone to clue me in on this since she really, really wants one and I'm at a loss here.

It can not be used as a phone.

Some app's you have to pay for - but lots and lots and lots are free.

It has wireless, that will work when you're somewhere WITH wireless. If you're not somewhere with wireless, you can't download, get on the internet, etc.

BUT - when you are somewhere with internet, you basically hold in your hands a cute little computer! Internet access, apps, fun!

And, last but not least - it's an MP3.

Just a little note, Black Friday at Walmart, the itouch will be the 200 dollars but you get a free 50 dollar itune card (to download songs and stuff on the touch) so it's like paying 150. Great deal!

the 8gig one is which is the 3rd generation which is exactly the same as the second generation which is $149.00 at the apple store (they are sold out right now but a search should turn some up other places)

There is also free converter software out there such as Videora or APEX (i think you have to purchase this one) that will convert your DVD's to the format of the Ipod Touch so they can put their movies right on their ipod too!! an IPhone is what you can use as a phone.....I love my IPOD touch!!

oh i was looking for something like that. I have some kids movies that i would love to add for the aiplane ride down. do you remember the actual link for this?

personally I would not go with the 8gig touch, I would get the touch but I would go with the 32 gig for both.

Agreed. While there are some *very* good deals on the 8gig, it is a much better value to get the 32gig. With the 8 you are about to hit a capacity wall that will be come more aggrivating the more apps/video/music you put on the device. Best to spend the extra cash (about $90) for 4x more space and load it up with free apps. Sometimes apps are on 'sale' for a limited time.

Netbooks are nice but I don't recommend them. The iPod Touch does 75% of what they do granted it is with a smaller screen. Netbooks are portable but the Touch is even more so.

Agreed on the 32GB. 8GB is not enough space for a Touch at all.

You guys are great. Thanks for all the input. They need something to access facebook while at home or traveling, so we are not all wanting the same computer at the same time. I was considering a netbook for this until I started reading about the "touch". They really don't know enough about either to have a definite opinion about them so it will be left up to me to decide I guess.

Why not just ask them to research and decide which so the pressure is off you

Very true. A few months ago I was debating between a netbook and a MacMini and we went with the latter due to a great deal on a refurb from Apple. Knowing what they'll be using it for is the best guideline.
