Ok, I have been looking so forward to our vacation which begins tomorrow but as typical of me, I am a wreck to fly tomorrow......

I love Disney but hate the flight.....

Ok my DIS friends.....tell me how ridiculous I am being.....

Nope, I would never tell you that is ridiculous. My husband packs my suitcase every time we fly and he is in charge of the kiddos as well. Why? Because I am usually medicated no later than the night before we fly out. Only way I can do it without going through lots of therapy, and to be honest, taking a pill or two is a lot easier, cheaper, faster, and lots more comfortable for me. I know it is taking the easy way out, and some people will say we should face these fears without the aid of medication. I say, those people can do whatever they want. Leave me and my Xanax alone.

i'm not going to call you crazy...

i'm terrified of it too - but there's no other way to get to WDW....so....

i manage to get there unmedicated, but i know lots of people who go the sedative route and say its the way to go..

just keep thinking of where that bird is going to take you....the happiest place on earth.....like a mantra.....

i tend to do all sorts of bargains with God.......('just get me through this flight.....")

whatever works for you.....pretty soon you'll be with mickey and the rest won't matter....

I'm one of the people who has to get medicated too! Bring on the pre-flight Xanax! Right before I flew to Disney last time I was so drugged I sent out text messages saying "I'm so sacred." But hey, I got there, right!

Don't be ashamed! Fear of flying is very common. My daughter was terrified to fly on her first trip to WDW. We went to her pediatrician about a month before we left and discussed our concerns (i.e. I didn't want her freaking out and being disruptive on the plane). Our doctor prescribed her Ativan and we packed the prescription in our carry-on bag. I told her that the Ativan was "just in case" she needed help relaxing once we got to the airport. As soon as we arrived at our gate (approximately 1 hour before the flight), I asked her if she wanted to take the medicine or try to fly without it. She was brave and tried to fly without it- she did o.k., but on the trip home she requested the medicine. The return flight was much better for her. I made sure not to make her feel funny about taking it- the reason why those meds are prescribed is because it is truly awful to deal with overwhelming anxiety.

Don't forget that deep breathing, a scented hand lotion, music and a glass of wine may help relax you as much as an Ativan would. Just do what you need to do to tolerate the flight and tommorrow you will be in WDW!

Good luck!
-Kelly

You are not ridiculous! Just keep an eye on your breathing, 4 seconds in, 4 seconds out. I use distraction by podcast which usually helps a little (and some medication).

All my best, and have a great trip!

I understand your fear of flying. I HATE HATE TO FLY!!!!! you are leaving soon it might not help but i read this book about flying that describes all the noises and sounds that a plane makes so you can make sense of them and not sensationalize what you think it is. It did ease some of my anxiety and as crazy as this sounds I got a hypnosis fear of flying cd that I listened to every night which def calmed me down.

when I get super anxious

I usually take a couple of xanax for shorter flights and an ambien for longer flights. I recently took an ambien on our flight from orlando to nyc and it was a big mistake. you are suppose to sleep for at least 8 hours on ambien, well the flight was only 2.5 hours and for about 3 days afterwards I was blacking out and very forgetful, this is very common if you do not get the reguired 8 hours when you take ambien they call it "travelers amensia" I think.

the fact is flying is safe and the odds of something happening are very very minor the thing about flying that often gets to me to most are the thoughts I put in my own head.

You are not crazy...I understand completely... I feel the same way...That is why we drive from MA every year.

Just like you, I know I would be okay, but I am filled with too much anxiety and i don't enjoy it. Hopefully you have some medication to help you.

Have a wonderful time!
:)

I hate flying too. I am fine with flights that are smooth, but the second we hit turbulence I get VERY nervous. I grasp my husbands hands and try to calm myself, but I am never happy until we touch down. When I flew to Russia I used medication, and it was a great flight! I don't bother with meds to places that are less than four hours away, cause the drugs make me feel yucky.

I understand completely...it's about 6 hours in the air for my family to visit WDW...I'd probably go more often if that wasn't the case because I also get very anxious when flying.

your there already..so plz post how it went..i get seasick real bad( cant even snorkel) i want to go on a disney cruise but am petrified of getting sick and not being able to get off. i enjoy flying but need dramanine. your fear is very real. just looking to see how u coped..

THank you for all your words.

We are here at the Animal Kingdom with the most amazing view.

The flight was VERY smooth until we got just outside of Orlando. The pilot announced there was a line of storms coming through and it may be bumpy.

HA! That was an understatement.

At one point, my daughter's lifejacket fell out from underneath the seat!

She kept yelling "whhheeeeeeeee" (UGH)

Then they rerouted us and we went about 10 minutes past Orlando and landed from the opposite direction.

It was scary, but as always, we are SO happy to be here!

14 more days and we do it again! LOL

We are flying again....I fly because I love Disney so much but I jut don't like it!
:lmao::lmao:

I know how you feel! I'm sorry to hear you had a rough flight (landing), that is one of the worst things about flying. I usually take Rescue Remedy when I fly & it helps. I am going to Tampa next week (first time in years going to FL but not WDW) & I will have my Rescue Remedy with me. Some one else mentioned deals with God, I do this too! Have a great vacation & safe, easy flight home.
