Nervous about kids on verandahs?

My kids are not wild, but they are (3 & 5) normal, active, curious, climbing kids.
I have never been on this ship--or any with my young sons. Have you been nervous about your kids on the verandahs and decks (i.e. tumbling overboard?) Is this a non-issue? Are the railings very high?

Or should I choose a room w/o a verandah so I am not constantly saying, 'Boys! Come away from there!'

My DS6 who was DS5 last year presented no problems. The sliding glass doors are nearly impossible to open by him and when my DW or myself had it open, we pretty much kept a good eye on him. We have another verandah cabin in May for this year. - Mike

I have been on four cruises and still can't get the door to the verandah open.:(
The railings are high but I would not allow a child out there alone even for a nanosecond. There are chairs and a table they can stand on.

You did mention that your kids are climbing kids. If you leave your verandah doors open and there is a chance they might be out on the verandah alone then might I suggest that you remove the chairs. If you plan on always being present, they I wouldn't worry. The railings are high.

I figured this would be a good excuse to save money and book a porthole room instead!

I flagged down a room steward to show me how to open the veranda - it isn't easy to open.

We didn't have any problems with our kids on the veranda. The rails are covered from the inside with plexiglass - making them impossible to climb. We never let our kids out there unsupervised and the first day set down "big" ground rules on "anybody stands on the furniture and we will have it taken off the veranda."

I kind of figure Disney has hundreds of kids on a couple hundred cruises every year - if it were easy to fall overboard, it would happen - it doesn't seem to.

I've been on a Princess Cruise and had a verandra room there. They have glass similar to Disneys. While sitting out there I noticed a little girl, probably about three, climbing on the chair on the verandra below mine. There was no one else on that verandra except that child. I yelled down at her and she got down off the chair and ran inside her stateroom.

So as other posters have said. NEVER, NEVER EVER LEAVE YOUR KIDS ALONG ON THOSE VERANDRA's as they could go swimming.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

verendahs are great but if yoou are going to spend you cruise worrying i would just save the money and go with a cat 10 inside the are just as large as teh verendahs without the verendahs I did that 2 previous cruise cause i just kept dwelling on it even with assurances i just dwelled and said heck i want to have NO worries on this cruise use you judgement the doors are next to impossible to open but also very tricky to lock.. we thought ours was locked 2 times and it was not.. so not to scare you but just to let you know its not worth worry when you habe littleones do what youfeel comfy with. Last cruise got upgarded to an aft balcony worried for a few minutes then just decided o enjoy the upgrade and be deligent no problems but i did lose a little sleep worrying that my imp wpould get up etc...

Besides the door just being hard to open, it does have a knob that noone except an adult can reach to keep the door closed, even if they figure out how to unlatch it.

Only some are covered in plexiglass...others are metal and solid so little ones can't even see through...with those I worried about my daughter climbing up to see out so I made sure this time that we booked a room with a plexi glass one. i hated the metal one last time, when you sit in the chairs out there you couldn't see the beautiful water, all you saw was metal.

Our first cruise years ago was DCL and on a Navigator's Verandah. Michael was 5 and it was awful since he was not tall enough to see over the solid wood railing.

The past 7 cruises have always been with a regular verandah (plexiglass). We have felt better that he could see it without having us to hold him up over the rail constantly!

It is worth repeating - never allow your child to be alone on the verandah - regardless of how obedient, mature s/he is!

I have never had a problem opening my verandah door and if I did, I certainly would have asked the host/ess to assist me. Considering what we pay for it, I want to use it to the max!!!

If you have never had dinner on your verandah looking at a sunset or breakfast there watching the sunrise, just give it one try and you might be as hooked as we are!!!!!

I did the same thing - made sure the veranda had a railing the kids could see through. We had an "enclosed" balcony at BWVs that had them standing on the furniture to see out - learned that lesson already.

Thanks for the assurances. Obviously, since I am concerned about this months before the cruise, I would not leave them unattended out there. I am mostly worried about them waking at 6am and deciding to look out while we were sleeping or taking a look out there while I am showering. It's good to know they won't be able to open the door without an adult.

In some sketches of the rooms I saw, the couch bed where they would be is next to the verandah while the bedroom bed is further away. I'd rather be the one sleeping next to the verandah door. Is that a certain type of room? Are the plexiglass railings a certain type of room or is it random?

Sofa/bed is by the door in the rooms, unless you are in the Suites. I never cared much for that idea myself but it would make it more difficult to manuever out the door with the large bed next to it. The door lock is very good and high up, plus the door is very heavy to move.
