Nemo ride

Sometimes I get a bit claustrophbic. Is Nemo likely to scare me? I don't mind elevators at all, but for some reason the thought of going under water bothers me! Any thoughts? Thanks. Pam

I'd like to say you don't have to worry, but the truth is, it can be a bit cramped down there! The seats are very small, so you are very close to your neighbor, usually touching. It is dark, and you only have a porthole in front of you letting in light. There are warnings that if you are claustrophobic, this ride might not be for you. I guess it's really up to you to decide just how severe your reaction might be.

If you can't, however, get on the sub, you should know that there is an alternative viewing experience where you just stand and watch instead of getting in the submarine, and there is not really a wait for that one :)

You're barely below the water, if that makes you feel any better. You will probably be shoulder to shoulder with the people next to you though.

I am claustrophobic also and the thought of the ride gave me anxiety. In reality it wasn't too bad. I am glad I did it, however, I don't need to do it again.

I get a little claustrophobic when it comes to the subs. I can sit through the ride, but I'd prefer not too. On my last trip I did try the "Outpost" where you watch a video of what the people on the ride see in a room with 2 benches and some space for a wheelchair. If you don't think you can do it, just go to the CM at the front of the queue and ask about the outpost and they'll get you in.

The sub does not submerge under water. The top hatch can be opened at any time if a problem with the ride would occur. Does that help?

We've done that - the Marine Observation Outpost (MOO). Last DL visit I went down in the sub with sister and her two little ones, and was glad we were near the hatch rather than at the far end of the sub. This is before the Chilean miners were rescued, mind you, so claustrophobia was on my mind.

You can see the top of the water from inside the boat, so it doesn't go deep. But it is a bit cramped inside.

I'm mildly claustrophobic and I was okay. I did find the ride a colossal waste of time, but I suppose that is a different issue. ;)

If you peer through the porthole and look up, you can see the surface of the water--you are barely below the surface of the water. The castmember who is "driving" the sub stands in the submarine on a little platform--their knees are at the level of your head...and their head sticks out through a "bubble" in the roof of the submarine and their "bubble" is above the waterline.

(My husband is an engineer and used to design submarines--he would be appalled at my terminology! LOL!)

I am slightly claustrophobic and it bothered me a bit when I first got in there (very cramped as other posters have said). I just put my face forward into the air blowing out the window and that helped. That being said, I am not in any hurry to ride it again.....

I am slightly claustrophobic as well but Nemo is one of my favorites. :) I just lean into the window really close so I feel the air in my face and so I can see the top of the water easily if I need to. It's really a fun ride so I suggest you try it, just ask to get on last and then have someone you're with sit next to you, then you've got the open area of the stairs on one side and someone you know on the other. :) Of course if you decide it's not happening ask the CM at the head of the line to direct you to the handicapped viewing room. It's the same as the ride only you're in a room and not "under" water. :)

Count me in the claustrophobic group, but Nemo doesn't bother me in the least? :confused3 Probably because you can see at all times, and the sub itself is not confining (it fits X number of people, it's not like the trunk of a car or an old-school MRI for example ;) ) Not a huge fan of the ride, it's really long and not worth a huge wait IMO - but we'll hop on it if the line is short and we're walking by it :)

Thanks everybody - I think I can do it! Once I found out that we are barely under water and there is an escape hatch, I felt much better! I just don't want to wait in a long line for the ride!

See, for me it was never about being 'submerged', but how close you can get packed in there. That was the horrible part that I don't want to experience again, lol.

CRAMPED?........ To say the least, especially for a person that is 6 foot 2inches. :)

BUT, to me it was worth it. Anything at DL is worth it. We have gone on it severval times, and each time fine/see something new.

The tip of leaning into the porthole and letting the air hit your face is a good one. That way you can focus on looking out the porthole and not into the "sub" itself.

And unless you are a very small person, you will be touching your nieghbor in one way or the other, ie: kness, elbows, hips....

eh, DBF is 6'2", sure it's cramped but it's also cramped for me and I'm 5'4". lol :)

Me, three. I have never been so happy to get off a ride, it was crowded and hot and not something I ever want to do again. My kids really want to do it (just dh and I went last time) but I think we will have to the above ground viewing this time.

I'm very claustrophic, but since it was just me and my daughter, I had to go on it with her. When you "submerge," I definitely felt that claustrophobia kicking up. I just looked through the porthole up towards the surface of the water, so my brain could compute that we weren't really going down. They have bubbles that go up in front of your window making you feel like you're submerging. I just had to talk my brain through it. :thumbsup2
