Negativity on the boards

I get it now. When Peter or John or Kevin (luv you guys!) criticize Disney its adorable and they are looking out for all of us, but when anyone else hammers the company's clumsy, irksome changes, some posters feel we are purely "mean" or "negative."

How incredibly noble to advocate for a monolithic multi-billion conglomerate faced with honest criticism from a housewife in Peoria!

Pollyanna, or Disney PR intern, I sometimes wonder.

I have loved Disney as long as I can remember. I have also found the atmosphere in the parks toxic on my last two visits, from the rope drop herd to disdainful or disinterested cast members (NOT just the college program kids), all made worse by the incestuous shoe-horned cross-branding like Frozen Norway, and I want the parks back. As long as there is a forum to make my opinions known, I intend to use it.

Recently, there was a post from someone talking about how difficult it was to explain all the changes that had occurred at WDW, including FP+. The first 10 responses were attacking her for her opinion. I couldn't believe it! I agree with you.

This is a good example of the type of negativity that I was talking about. When people start using the words like "toxic" and " incestuous" to describe WDW, it just makes me angry. Just because there is a forum that allows you to post does not mean that you don't have to do so in a responsible manner. That goes beyond just having an opinion on something you don't agree with to using extreme hyperbole to bash the parks.

I'm curious why that makes you angry? If people want to use what you consider hyperbole to describe something and they are doing so in a manner that doesn't violate the rules of this bord, then they are allowed to do that. Responsible manner is an interpretation in your mind of how you want people to post. That's not really fair to impose on others or you become a part of the negativity you are talking about.

I do have to say - some of it is just pure amusement for me as the DIS will get completely up in arms over some minor change.

:rolleyes1 High Five, lol, me too

anyways as regards the negativity on here

1. I rarely see it and if I do, I will respond and tell the posters they are being an *** (the one that sticks in my head is one about getting free sandwich at Earl of Sandwich)

2. Compared to another online community I have been a member of for over 10 years, the negativity on here is nothing. Some of the stalking, bullying and just down right nastiness that happens in large online communities is just atrocious and I'm not talking about social media, which is whole different level, I'm talking about in forums.

3. Some times I guess many regular parks visitors, either WDW, DL , DLP or the Aisian parks take their opportunity to visit the parks and experience the magic for granted. We forget sometimes that not everyone has the opportunity to visit the parks even once. We loose sight of whats really important, like making memories with family and friends and focus on the petty things like... oh I couldn't get a reservation at my favourite restaurant and my trip was ruined, or I couldn't get fastpasses and had to wait in line for hours and my trip was ruined...

To put things into perspective
There is a lady I know who is in her 40's and who has a rare disease called Ushers syndrome. She is has been told that she will be blind and deaf within a year. This summer she is travelling from Ireland to Disneyland California with her 7 year old daughter. This will be her first and ONLY vacation to a Disney park with her daughter before she goes blind. Her only wish for the Disney vacation is to see her daughter meet Mickey Mouse and the Disney Princesses. She just wants to have a memory of her daughter in Disneyland. THATS whats important and special and magical about the parks. Making memories.

Bugdad --- Pete and his crew have used far more incendiary language to describe things at the parks. i would like for you to go on record, right now, and call them destructively hyperbolic. thanks.

Provide me one example where Pete and his crew have referred to Disneyworld as being toxic and incestuous or worse and I will do just that. Your post was WAY over the top, in my opinion, and doesn't belong on either side of the discussion.

What about basic common sense? Do you really think that words like "toxic" and "incestous" are accurate descriptions of WDW? Or even close? I am all for you stating your opinion on things you don't like about Disney but I think it is not responsible to use words meant to portray any entity in such a destructive and sinister light for the sole purpose of "trying to make a point". I might be in the minority here but I think that is a big problem with society as a whole these days. People are more focused on the shock factor and the extreme than the truth. If anyone thinks that Disneyworld is actually that bad, I am not even sure what they would be doing here.

How negative are you being against other people who don't post in the manner you prefer? It is just my opinion but you seem to be a part of the very thing you are complaining about. Maybe just something to consider-or not.

oh good god people, @BugsDaddy @Allison read my above post!! You guys are squabbling over petty issues when there are people who get 1 chance in their whole lives to experience the magic. Get a grip and take a step back and learn to appreciate how lucky you are to have yor health and be able to visit Disney parks on a regular basis!!

Not squabbling. Just having a discussion and proving other views to consider both ways. That is okay and what this place is for. It's a discussion board with lots of interesting views to consider.

It would be pretty boring if everyone agreed all the time and different sides of things weren't presented.

Agree with the good health, but I work hard and pay a lot to visit WDW. I don't consider that "lucky"

As far as the negativity on this board: My very first naïve post was attacked for my honest opinion on a subject that I noticed as a big change in the wDW I've always known. I was immediately attacked for my insensitivity, blah, blah, and I was really concerned that I actually said something "wrong". Disney has since changed this policy and stopped the abusers, the very thing I was addressing. But the same people who so vehemently attacked me for expressing an opinion are the same ones that continue to do so to ANYONE who does not think the way they do! This has continued and gotten more out of control over the past months by these same people; you know who you are! I love Disney and will continue to go and continue to express my thoughts, concerns, and experiences even if a certain few people choose to monitor what we say and think. This is for you: Jumping on people who do not think or feel the way you do does more harm to a newbie than being quiet and letting everyone have their say. Whew, glad to finally say what I've been thinking for some time.

yes it is lucky fortunate , because you are in a position to be able to work to get the money to visit the parks. There are some people who no matter how hard they work and how much money they save , will never get to vist WDW or Disney California due to not being able to get a visa to enter America.

There are people who no matter how they work will never have the money to visit the parks.

Having the money, no matter how you get that money to visit the parks is a privilege many will never experience.

How about "fortunate" ...does that work better?

much better word thanks

So, if someone comes to your house and starts making over the top comments about how horrible it is (clearly exaggerating the negative) and some one else states that their comments were rude and unnecessary, you are going to call out the second person as being the negative one?

It would work for health, but not for earnings. IMO fortunate implies some sort of luck. But I work hard for what I earn so I don't think of myself as "fortunate". I know it's just semantics and really kind of stupid, but it's just me. Pick another adjective: industrious or hard working fit the bill.

I agree with Allison on her response. This really has nothing to do with what we are discussing. Should their be no differing opinions discussed as long as there are less fortunate people in the world?

We will agree to disagree. I think a lot of people make choices about how they earn and spend their money. Yes, I'm lucky I haven't had a major financial disaster, but that's about it.

I am not going to be grateful or feel privileged that I can visit WDW. I have worked hard and saved money that allows me to visit the parks. It's not a privilege

I feel very privileged to have a job that allows me to work late into the night, on weekends, etc. so that I can afford to take my family to WDW. Don't assume that everyone is just handed free trips to WDW and its all just a matter of luck. It's a lot of hard work and planning being this "privileged".

Now, that we agree on. :)

I'm saying I am seeing it as going both ways. It sounds corny, but 2 negatives don't make a positive. People are negative on both sides and each thinks they are justified in doing so. I'm including myself in this too. It's how we humans work I suppose.

ETA-I'm sorry this thread seems to be declining. There were some interesting observations.
