My husband and I know that we want to purchase DVC resale points but we are always hesitant about jumping during a frenzy. We are not DVC members yet, so the changes are a consideration. However, we know that we would not use the points for cruises or timeshare trades, so is there any benefit to rushing into things right now? I want to make sure that we are making the most informed decision and I have tried to do my research the best that I can but I know those of you who have been members for a while will be able to see things a bit more clearly. Thanks so much to any of you who can help!

actually, you can still use a resale contract to trade through RCI for other timeshares after 3/20...it's just that it's rarely a good value to do so. you would lose the ability to trade for cruises and other onsite hotels.

definitely be patient. research DVC on the DIS for another month or 2 - make sure you have a feel for what people like and don't like and whether that affects you.

i expect you'll save a little if resale prices drop after 3/20 but in any event, it's better to make sure DVC is a good fit for you.

Agree with chalee. There is no need to rush into things currently despite all the hoopla, especially in light of the fact that you don't plan to use any points you may buy for cruising or trading out. You have the correct mindset, so do your homework before you jump in. . .and take your time. ;)

I agree. Study things over and take your time. Over the years, I've switched my home points over to my favorite all around resort to stay at (SSR) so I'm happy no matter what. ;)

The current hoopla will quiet down eventually.

You wouldn't be able to use the resale points for the Concierge Collection ( a select few high end hotels around the country, on a nightly basis), the Disney Collection (other disney hotels) (which includes cruises) or the Adventurer Collection (disney's version of a touring company type vacations - HIGH points values). You would still be able to use them for RCI trade outs if you wish to do so, as well as any of the DVC resorts besides your home resort, including Vero Beach & Hilton Head, at the 7 month booking window.

Unless those restrictions are options you will want to use your points for, there's really no reason to rush into this. Number 1 rule of thumb around here, is buy where you want to stay the most. If Beach Club is your favorite DVC resort, wait for the right resale contract and buy there, for instance.

Good luck with your decision and happy planning!

Completely on board with what everyone here has said. A purchase such as this should never be made in a rush. You should gather information, plenty of which you can get from these boards. Ask questions and be certain of where you want to buy and if DVC is a good fit. You are aware of the impending changes and since they don't matter to you, you should take your time and be completely comfortable with the decision to buy. Good Luck! :goodvibes

I also don't think you should rush. DVC is a big purchase and you want to make sure, IMO, that you know exactly what you want when you jump on board. The good news is that you know that waiting will give you a few less perks than buying before.

But, also remember, that what they are taking away from resales after March 20th, can be taken away from everyone, even direct sales, somewhere down the road. To buy quickly to avoid that change, when you would still be at risk anyway (we all are) would not be wise.

We considered DVC for years but never took the plunge because at the end of the day, we knew we wanted to stay near the MK. We were fans of the CR and prior to BLT, DVC didn't offer us the option to stay within walking distance to our favorite park. As much as we wanted to join, not having the place we love as an option (or an expensive one), just didn't make sense.

We bought when BLT was built because it gave us what we want. In your case, take your time, be sure DVC fits your needs, be sure you know what home resort you want to get, and be sure you understand the pros and cons of buying.

Once you are a member, if you really ever found that you were missing some of those benefits, adding on through Disney is always an option.

Good luck!

You'll have to decide. Unless you buy now you would not be able to use resale points for DCL based on the current info. IMO those trades are not worth it (points too high), and you'll save money buy buying less points and using cash for other options, esp if you wait until after the resale change goes into effect.
