If you cancel 31 days before your trip your points can be used later within your current use year. Banking and borrowing are considered final transactions so any moved points would have to be used up in the use year.
If some or all of the points were from your current use year, those can be banked IF you're still in the 1st 8 months of your UY.
So for example, I have 2 use years. My August UY points are bankable during the months of August through March. After March 31 any current UY points I have not used or banked must be used by July 31 or they expire. I could cancel an October reservation and get my points back, and bank them if I wanted.
On the other hand, my December use year points would not be as flexible. My December use year points can be banked between the months of December and July. But during the last four months of my use year (August through November), my points are not bankable. Therefore I would have to use those points no later than November 30.
But, if you cancel your reservation too close to the beginning of your trip, your points go into holding. Holding points must be used in your current use year and cannot be used to create a reservation more than 60 days out. This makes them more difficult to use.
I can't remember if the deadline is 30 days out or 31.
[edited to add it's 30 days out. I googled "
DVC holding points " to double check. Also, I'm sorry to hear about your family's reduction in income, and I hope things get better for you soon.]
