Need to rent an RV.....

Hi all. Long story short, 5 years ago DH and I moved here to NC. Within the next few years my brother and sister moved down as well. We all live within 15 minutes of each other, a wonderful thing, but now need to get back up to our parents in NJ relatively soon. Flyings not an option (financial and fear!) so any suggestions to where to rent a motorhome so we could all drive up together. We're only looking for 4-5 days probably over the New Years weekend. Thanks for any suggestions.

Renting an RV is expensive, before you factor in the cost of fuel (they get about 7 miles to the gallon.) They do'nt handle well at all in snowy or windy weather, and can be difficult to manuever if you aren't used to a larger vehicle.

It would be much less expensive to just rent a minivan. It's not that long of a trip that you need more than that. You can make the drive in one day.

Hi and thanks. Yes, we just bought a minivan about 6 months ago and that's good for me, DH and our 3 kids but we were hoping to share the driving and all ride up together. We used to rent motorhomes when we lived up North, just haven't found a place down here yet.

OK, I was thinking you were talking just four adults.

How many total passengers are you talking about?

It will still probably be cheaper to jsut take two cars.

I agree with ducklite. RV rental is expensive! You could take two vehicles and stay in motels for cheaper.

There will be 8 of us which is 2 cars which is gas for 1300 miles roundtrip TWICE which is still cheaper than the cost of an RV I'm sure. But we'd like for the 3 guys to share the driving, 12 hours each way.

Use the cruise america they can find a place close to you for rental it's going to be no more expensive then if you fly up.Thats what you are really compairing it to so it shouldn't be that bad.

We also rented a 15 pass van for trips to take our paintball team around thats another option went from Md. to Toronto in a blizzard one year.

Cruise America's RV's only go to seven passengers. I just did a little calculating for you, and if you took the largest model they have (seven passenger) it would be $1000 (including milage) not including gas or generator charges ($3/hour). You will sign a contract stating that max seven people are riding in the RV, and if you are in an accident and they find out there are eight, it could negate the insurance coverage. Underage driver surcharges apply.

It will get about seven miles per gallon, so plan on close to $500 in gas.

Thanks so much for all the replies; we're still deciding what to do. Considering they're getting more snow up north we might be more comfortable driving our own vehicles but then we're back to both drivers having to drive the whole time.

Why can't the wives help with the driving?

Rent the 15 pass van this will be best for you trust me .You can even take a seat out and leave at home for more room. This will save your vans let you all drive together.Ours handled very well during the blizzard we drove nonstop through.

Please do not rent a 15 passenger van. They flip very easily. School districts and day cares are no longer able to purchase these in many states because they are very dangerous. Yes I am biased as I have lost 5 students in seperate accidents in 15 passenger vans. As a former EMT/firefighter, I saw more than my share of fatal 15 passenger van accidents.

I say take two cars and breaks as needed.
