I posted recently about my parents' 50th anniversary. Before we get there in August, however, we will celebrate DH's parent's 50th weekend after next. DH thought that he and his 3 siblings would go in on something "big" but no one else wants to...they are all "doing their own thing." We wanted for everyone to go in on a computer so they will have email, but the inlaws aren't interested. (Mostly because they are too cheap to pay for Internet access.) We thought of money for a trip, but the siblings say they wouldn't take one.

Help! Any ideas???? They own two small houses, both filled to the brim with stuff (they never get rid of anything). They don't need anything. It's too late to have a nice family portrait done.

I'm counting on your individual and collective brilliance.

This is not necessarily a "nice" gift, but I got my husband to make a video for my parent's 35 year anniversary. I took a lot of pictures of my parents that I had, starting when they were young, and progressed up until they met each other, then pics of them together progressing up to now. He set it to music that they dated to, that correlated with the era of the pictures.

I know that sounds weird, but it was quite touching... It started with their baby pictures, alternating, and ended with a very recent photo of them.

I think you can order an old magazine from the week/month they were married. (Look, Life or one of those). It's kinda neat to see what the news stories from that time & the fashions, what was "in".

I like the idea of old pix organized. I have a SIL who has gone through my DM's photo albums and picked out a few to have enlarged & framed.

This is what we did. We picked out several of their favorite radio shows from the year they were married, and ordered them on cassette. Packed them in a little gold box. It was a fun, sentimental gift.

Here's one source:

Yes, I know that lots of people create touching videos from the family pictures, but the pictures are in Illinois and we're in Texas.

Not sure this is really a suggestion. OK, the first part is. We had DW's parents and all of her siblings and their families to WDW to OKW (DVC) for her parents' 50th. It was really a great time and quite affordable if you save up your points. Anyway, what NOT to do is let you FIL create a 3 hour multimedia presentation (the modern day "slide show" horror) to commemorate the anniversary. Imagine 20 people crammed into the LR at an OKW villa watching a 3 hour show with special emphasis on obscure genealogy and the Korean war. :p

I am not sure if there is time to do this. But at my GP's 50th, the family had a family tree made. It is engraved on a gold plaque. On the trunk of the tree is a heart with my GP's names, birthdates and birthstones. On the branches are the names of the three children with the same info. Then listed are the grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc.

I can't tell you how excited I was to see DH's name go on that plaque. I am planning a visit to my GM's in a couple of weeks and can't wait to see my childrens' names on it. GM sends it out periodically to have names added.

It was a beautiful and touching gift.

If there is not time for that, how about 50 gold dollars wrapped in a pretty box.
