I am hoping to be able to indulge in some desserts, but I need sugar free. Last time I cruised, I just abstained, but this time, I want to treat myself a little. I am not a huge sweets person, so I don't need a lot of choices. Maybe a sugar free smoothie? mmmmmm. I am sure they have sugar free ice cream. Oooh..what I wouldn't do for a sugar free mickey bar.

Would this be something to note on my reservation, or just wing it and if they have something, great, if not..oh well?

There are always a couple of no-sugar added desserts on the menus.

They may not be what you like (I get it...RCCL seemed to think that the only gluten-free desserts were mousses and puddings (and not a ton of difference between them TBH) when I was on Brilliance this summer...and with a 12-night cruise I got SICK of that texture), but they are there.

ETA as well...If this is a medical requirement such as because of diabetes, then yes. You should let them know. And get ready to get to know your head server very well. :P Those of us with food issues usually do.

There are 2 'no sugar added' desserts on each MDR menu.

Some examples from our August Alaskan cruise:

Animator's Palate:
  • Duo Chocolate Cake (layers of brownie and truffle mousse with caramel sauce)
  • Chilled mango mousse (with tropical fruit sauce).

Til We Meet Again menu:
  • Cappuccino Mousse (coffee infused chocolate mousse with raspberry coulis),
  • Seasonal Fruits (with sugar-free cookies)
Freezing the Night Away Menu:
  • Sitron Mousse (light creamy lemon mousse with rhubarb puree
  • Almond Berry Crumble Cake (with fresh berry compote)

Some of the sugar free are better than the regular desserts. I go with whatever sounds the best. But you need sugar free everyday. I think you will be satisfy with what they have to offer.

Are sugar-free dessert items less sweet, or just as sweet but sweetened with a sugar substitute? If sugar substitute, which one does DCL use?

They are definitely less sweet. I like some of them better. But I don't really have a sweet tooth. I'm like pooh but that's mainly from eating too much not from sweets.

My husband has to eat completely sugar free so he told our servers the first night on the ship. They brought him a sugar free dessert every night that he loved. He asked what they used as a sweetner and was told one-by-one which is similar to Splenda. Hope that helps.

I would think that the Chefs would appreciate a heads up on what you need. Might make the kitchen run more efficient if they knew ahead of time.
Give them a chance to show off their skills too.:flower3:
