Does anyone have an recommendations on space heaters. The Natural gas prices here in NJ are going up 23% :earseek:

My bill averages $300 a month so I cant imagine it being higher. I cant afford the $300 as it is.

We turn the heat back at night but during the day I am home with the 2 babies. Since one is a very active 15 mo is their one kind of heater that would be safer than another?

I can't really give you any recommendations on what type to get since we don't use them but what I will say is that my DH is a firefighter and he has put out 5 fires in the past 2 weeks because of those heaters.

You have got to be SOOOOO CAREFUL when it comes to those. If you use one at all sit it in the middle of the room away from EVERYTHING. Make sure the cords and plugs are in great condition, keep the babies away from them of course. They tip over so easy, but some come with a mechanism that if it accidentally tips over it automatically shuts off. Look for that type when buying.

JUST PLEASE BE CAREFUL

**Last year a boy I grew up with lost both of his sons in a fire 1 week before Christmas due to one of these heaters that was placed too close to clothes in the floor.

My old home was very drafty and we used a Portable Oil-Fill Radiator Heater.

worked very well , you can get one at Lowes for about $35.00

I use a 1500 watt electric heater in my DD's room. I know that it is equivalent to running 15 100 watt light bulbs during the time that it is on, but it keeps her room from getting cold. I don't really think we save any money from running it. :confused3 It is osclilating and turns off immediately when tipped to the side. The newer models are very good about safety features, although you still must be careful. We bought one for my son's room last year from WalMart, but it was a piece of junk. I think it was $39.99 and made by Holmes. I'll check and see what the model number was because I wouldn't reccommend it - it only worked for about 6 weeks (long enough to lose the receipt. :rotfl: )
My MIL had an oil heater, but said it left a residue from the oil all over her house, on the walls, ceilings, light fixtures, etc. She had to repaint a hallway in the spring after running it all winter in her hall. :p

From what I've heard, space heaters use electricity BIG TIME and 99% of the time won't save you any money in the end. What your gas bill goes down by, your electric bill will go up by.

We have a deLonghi oil radiant heater. Bought it at Sam's. We use it in the sun room which does not have duct work going to it. It keeps it toasty warm in there. It is completely self contained so there is no sooty residue on anything. It will NOT tip over unless you have a rambunctious St. Bernard! It does have a timer and a thermostat on it, so those are nice features. We've used it every fall/winter/early spring for a couple of years now and it runs great.

Savings wise, I dunno. We have all electric heat as it is, so I'm just transferring some of the electric to that instead of the furnace which would NOT do an adequate job in heating that room b/c of the lack of ductwork. If we did not have that in there, the room would be unusable for 6 months out of the year.
