Need some reassurance for a newbie

Ok...so I started C25K in May and finished the program 2 weeks ago. Yay me! I was running for time each week building up more time just to get acclimated. I was using my Ipod with Nike plus thing to track my time/pace/calories. All in all on my 30 minute run with 5 minute warm up and cool down i was tracking at 3.4 miles. So I figured i wasn't quite at 3.1 running but would be there quickly.

Well, now I just checked by mapping my run and I'm only at around 2.2 miles running. I'm now doing the one hour runner program because for me I count the minutes down in my head (crazy I know) but I'm a little scared that I won't be at the 5k distance for the Everest Challenge and that's my goal. Also, now that I haven't been going as far as I thought I found out that I run very slow (it appears almost slower than i walk):sad2:

I'm going to buy the Garmin 305 (it's on sale at best buy here in NY for $129) so that i can have a better training tool. But I just need some reassurance that I'm going to be able to go farther and faster at some point.

Last nights 30 minute run (it's my sixth time doing that in the past 2 weeks) felt like I wanted to die. It was so humid here. I just don't feel like I'm going to get past this hurdle.

Help!

keep on truckin and it WILL get easier, promise! I vividly (and horribly) remember my running before I finished my first 5k. I hated it. :) The Garmin would be a fun addition to training and a definite answer as to how far you're running.

I also ran 3 miles yesterday for my training (i'm in north Jersey) and the humidity was KILLER! Normally I can run 3 miles fairly easily (a few years after my first 5k!) and yesterday was TORTURE! i wanted to run today again for a little but the thought of how it was yesterday is totally making me rethink that.

Jane First off---deep breath! Second, EE is a ways away so there is time for you to build. I know it's hard, but if you have training plan that you trust, stick with it and let the results build slowly.

I know that sometimes (Okay, almost always) when I am out on my training runs I feel like "I'll never be able/ready to do this race" (whatever it is), but then I remind myself that that is why I am TRAINING. It takes a while, and try not to jump ahead and sweat it.

Plus, there is definitely a difference between training and racing. I run faster during races, although I still don't know how or why! It just happens.

So breathe again and try not to worry.

In addition to what the others have said remember that you will get an adrenaline boost on race day. Until you experience it yourself there is no way I or anyone else can adequately explain it but it is worth both a little speed and a little distance.

Now, I would recommend doing at least one 3 mile run/jog before the distance but keep in mind that most half and full marathon training programs never have you run the full race distance ahead of time. I am training for my first marathon and won't be doing the full 26.2 before race day and I never did 13.1 before my first (Disney of course) half.

Hang in there and when you cross the finish line the first time you will be hooked.

I had to laugh. First two postings mentioned the humidity in New York and New Jersey.

Come run down here, you'll know humidity.

Seriously agree with the above posts. Training is just that, training. There are so many times I wonder if I can make it. Many runs I seem to just barely finish but I ran the Goofy last year, will run it this year so it just takes weeks after weeks of GRADUAL improvement. You'll make it.

My training runs are nowhere near my race times. I mean not even close. I cannot run as fast in training as I do in a race. I just get caught up in the excitement!

get out there and have faith and fun!

As I keep running through our humidity I keep reminding myself that it's going to be hot and possibly just as humid when I get there in September so that this is perfect training. If I had to train in Florida, I'm pretty sure I'd still be sitting on the couch watching lots of you run by.

Thanks for all the reassurance. I just needed someone to tell me I'm going to get there. I'm soooooo impatient. Off to go pick up my Garmin now.:yay:
