I need input on appropriate books for my two neices, 5 and 8 years old. Can anyone share their thoughts on this please?

My 8 year old daughter has loved the Disney fairy series that you can get at the Disney store, Target, Borders, etc. Titles are like "The Trouble with Tink", etc. She also enjoys the Bailey School kids series, Cam Jansen, and The Wayside School series.

American Girl series, Little House on the Prarie series for the 8 year old

Rainbow Magic Fairy series for the 5 year old

Shel Siverstein poetry books for both

My DD(4) LOVES books. Her are a few of her favorites in addition to anything with the Disney princesses:

1. Petit Rouge (cajun telling of little red riding hood)
2. The Princess and the Pizza (the princess in this story has the same attitude as my princess)
3. The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs
4. The series of books by Madonna (even though I am not a fan of hers -- my sis bought them for DD)
5. The Gingerbread Boy
6. The Mitten
7.Any and all Dr. Seuss books

For the 8 year old: I totally agree with the Little House series. How about Judy Blume books (loved those as a kid). Also Lynn Cheney has a book Our 50 States .. . really cool.

We love books and spend hours every week at the book store. There are some beautiful Christmas books out right now if that is an option.

DD6 loves the I Spy and Can You See What I See? books I love them too!

My neices love the Junie B Jones series :cool1: :cool1:

DD7 loves to read, and here are some of her favorites:

Junie B. Jones (about a 2nd grade reading level)
Magic Tree House (also about a 2nd grade reading level)
anything by Beverly Cleary (Ramona books, Ralph Mouse books - these are probably a 4th or 5th grade level)
Bailey School Kids (2nd grade)
Boxcar Children (her new absolute favorite - 3rd-4th grade reading level)
Jack Russell dog detective (2nd grade level)

DD7 reads on a 5th grade level, but she loves to read Junie B. Jones and Magic Tree House because they are great books. She will read them over and over again because they are fun. It kind of depends on the reading level of the 8 year old, but some books are just fun to read even if they might be a little easier than her reading level.

DD7 is reading Superfudge by Judy Blume right now. Some of the Judy Blume books have older-kid themes, so be aware. An author like Beverly Cleary is pretty harmless and doesn't have anything that might be too emotionally advanced for an eight year old. I have to be careful to find books on DD's reading level that are not too advanced emotionally - she is still a seven year-old.

When she was in kindergarten, she loved Dr. Seuss, Nate the Great, Amelia Bedelia. If the five year old is not a proficient reader, the Biscuit books are cute and good easy readers.

Hope this helps! :thumbsup2

The 2nd the Junie B Jones series. My daughter loved them. Also the American girl series.

Shoot.... I love Junie B. and I'm 41 yo. She just cracks me up. Reading them to my 7 yo is a special time for us. She can read them a little now by herself, but we really enjoy reading them together.
