I've had my Nikon D50 for 2 yrs and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it... but sometimes it's just quite cumbersome to carry around for day to day activities (I like to keep a PnS in my purse for those impromptu moments!) and I don't like bringing it certain places such as the beach. I usually rely on my Kodak PnS from almost 5 yrs ago for those times, but it's time to upgrade since it's only a 4megapixel and not giving me anywhere near the crispness of my SLR in the photos. I want something in the 8megapixel range WITH video capability (for the once in a while footage I want to take). Any suggestions? I was toying with the Canon S5 but I have yet to see it in person. Is it as large as my D50? If so, that would defeat the purpose :rotfl: Other ideas? Sony Cybershot? Nikon Coolpix? Fuji? Looking for any and all opinions :) :) Thanks in advance!!!!:goodvibes

The S5 IS is a bit big for your needs, I would suspect. As you are a Nikon user, I'd suggest looking at the Nikon line. It will give you more familiar functionality, I would think. Maybe the P80. I do not use Nikon nor Sony so I can make no specific recommendations. Sorry, I can't help much here.

I have and love my Canon Elph SD850. It's my 3rd Elph and I've been very happy with all of them. My daughter recently bought an Olympus 840 which is even smaller. The drawback is that Olympus uses Xd memory cards.

And I'm another Beach Club Resort Fan.... loved the sandy bottom pool!

We just got a Nikon Coolpix S210 for DW who wanted a small one. Smaller and lighter than a deck of cards, easily fits in her purse (inside a case) and takes pretty good pics for a P&S. $160 range unless you find it on sale. So far so good. If you want to spend a little more there are higher end Nikon Coolpix that have more features you might like.

We got one of these about a month ago. It has not had very much use, but so far we like it.

I also have a D50 that I love. I bought the Canon A560 for those days when I don't want to carry my D50. I'm usually a Nikon person but the price was right on this Canon just before Christmas.
A friend of mine bought a Canon SX100IS that seems really nice. 10x zoom- 8mp's, SD cards, AA batteries. Bigger than a Coolpix or my Canon A560, tho much smaller than a D50.

You might want to consider the Canon Ixus860 / 870 (I think it's 870 in the US, 860 in Europe. I have no idea why).

Anyway, it's small enough that I wear it in a belt pouch pretty much everywhere I go, it has a 28mm equivalent wide-angle end and 3.5x (I think) optical zoom. Pictures from it are crisp, sharp and well saturated. It has a 640x480 30fps movie mode too, and takes SDHC cards so you can put huge amounts of memory in it if you wish.

I love mine.

regards,
/alan
